No we have never been to NY at Christmas, would love a list :)

OK - for Princess Fiona and Amaroo and anyone else going to NYC in December -

Here’s a great map for a holiday windows walk: Macys, Lord & Taylors, Saks, Barneys, Bloomingdales - ( don't forget you can get a 10% discount card at Macys and Bloomies - go to Visitor Centre in each store)

Union Square Holiday Market:

Bryant Park Holiday Market:

GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL HOLIDAY FAIR:
Events at Grand Central Terminal :: The Centennial Holiday Fair presented by Shaw Floors :: Nov 18, 2013
A couple of train shows :-
New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show - Saturday, November 16th through Sunday, January 12th
Grand Central Terminal Holiday Train Show - Saturday, November 16th through Sunday, February 23rd

and of course the trees -

American Museum of Natural History (origami tree) - Monday, November 25th through Sunday, January 12th

Metropolitan Museum of Art (baroque tree) – Tuesday, November 26th

Rockefeller Center - Wednesday, December 4th (ceremony from 7-9 pm) through 11 pm on Tuesday, January 7th

The big company buildings on 6th Avenue ( from about 47th to 58th Streets) usually have a good display of Xmas decorations - I think it is UBS have HUGE red balls in their fountain - that is always a good photo op !

The Bryant Park markets and skating rink sums up everything Christmas in a cold climate.

And the latest-Lord and Taylors is a better bet than Macys.
Reason 1.Although you still get the 10% off voucher they are excluding some sales items.
Reason 2.Lord and Taylors will give you the friends and family discount of 25% throughout the store without you even asking.
Reason 3.Macys is just frantic.Much fewer customers at Lord and Taylors so less stressful.
Reason 4.You can then have a short walk to the Bryant Park or Grand Central Christmas markets.

Lord and Taylor's was my favourite shop. I first found them in Boston. I'd find gorgeous designer label dresses with ridiculous prices. I kept going to the counter and checking if I was interpreting the discounts properly. The sales lady was gorgeous. I don't think she'd seen any Aussie ladies in full shopping mode. She was an African American and had a great smile. She kept laughing and then would scan another discount coupon for me.

I bought so much stuff. When she was checking the items out an American lady behind me asked if she could hurry it up as it was taking so long. Well, I don't think anyone has taken so much time from that point on in making sure every item was meticulously wrapped in Tissue paper.

Gotta love a bargain.

But Macys is a jungle.

Those Christmas markets at Bryant Park are gorgeous.

Century 21, literally a block away from the September 11 memorial, is a designer only department store which you can easily spend a day in. Prices are ridiculous -eg: Lacoste runners $49, 3 pack Tommy H underwear $12, 3 pack Ralph Lauren socks $9, cheap watches, handbags, mens dress shirts the list goes on...

I replaced my whole wardrobe in the USA this year. The shopping and variety is crazy!

Yes. I remember buying some excellent gloves at Century21. Then went back two days later and buying four more pairs.

Well Ralph Lauren 3 pack socks at Lord and Taylors today were $11 but with 15% off initially then the 25% of on top of that bringing them down to $7.And shopping at Lord and Taylors is much easier than Century 21-you can find things easily.
Both mrsdrron and I bought new watches today at 40% off for current models-and the ones mrsdrron had picked out prior to leaving Australia.

Macys will give you a card upon presentation of your non US passport that entitles you to the sales tax off all purchases, regardless of sale price or promotion.

But this week mrsdrron had the card knocked back "because the shoes are on sale".

And with prices like these its cheaper to fly to USA and buy things there, plus you get a holiday thrown in for free.

There are a few things that you can use the Macy's discount card on. For example I've never been able to use it on Levi's jeans.

I've just come back from a trip to NYC. I bought clothes in Macy's. I didn't have the 10% card but explained at the till that I was from overseas and they gave me the 10% discount.

Shopping in NYC cannot be complete without a visit to Tiffany &Co. With all that savings at other venues, a little trinket here and there wont add to your luggage allowance checked or carryon!!!!!!!

Though luckily for me it was closed by the time we got there on Dec 24. A detour via the NYC Apple store was strategic!!!

I still prefer Lord and Taylors over Macys. Also a L&T sale is better than Macys and it is nowhere as busy - with a lot less people to contend with.

Recently, in San Francisco, I got the "10% off" Macy's tourist card...when I went to pay, the lady said the Macy's card (not available to foreign tourists:() was better as it gave 15% off...so she scanned her own personal Macy's card. Win-win situation as I got an extra 5% off, and I presume she gets Macy's pts (or equivalent).

I did the majority of my shopping in SoHo. GREAT fashion! Some of it REALLY expensive but some of it was also quite cheap. You can spend the whole day there but prepare to be exhausted
