I had legacy Starwood and Marriott accounts which I combined late last year, and have just upgraded the status on my new soon-to-be-Bonvoy account to Gold Elite, using my Amex Platinum.
My wife and I will be spending a night in Hong Kong on the way back from Japan next month. I redeemed a bunch of AAdvantage miles for the trip (in business, MEL-SYD-NRT on QF/JL then KIX-HKG-MEL on CX) and we're otherwise looking to stay in spacious king rooms at nicer hotels (and returning to one from our honeymoon). I asked my Hong Kong-based coworker to recommend the best location for views in the evening and the morning, and he recommended specifically the Sheraton.
I have a flexible booking for a Deluxe Harbour View King room, with which we would be perfectly satisfied. It's only a single night, so the Deluxe bit (his-and-hers vanities in the bathroom and a few other cosmetic things) is probably not necessary, but the view would be nice.
How likely is it that Gold Elite status would get us a complimentary upgrade from Harbour View King (the next lower room class in my search, and would be satisfactory) to Deluxe Habour View King? Or would we just get a slightly larger room in the same class? I'd take a room with exec lounge access (I think they're the Tower rooms at the Sheraton Hong Kong) but would sooner keep the view over Victoria Harbour.
If it makes a difference to the likelihood of upgrade availability, this would be a Saturday night, 24/02.
If anyone has any particular insight into whether this hotel is generally good or otherwise with elite recognition, or whether legacy Starwood properties are more or less reliable for elite treatment than legacy Marriott ones, that would be helpful.
