SFO the new gateway to the US

SFO is a pleasant airport to arrive into and depart from. It has good public transport links into central San Francisco, and a good number of connecting flights.
It's great for *A flyers like myself, connections going pretty much anywhere. I haven't travelled much in the US, so I can't comment about how good or bad LAX is, but I've found SFO to be a good, practical airport and San Fran a fantastic and vibrant city. :)

I have to agree. If you need to transfer at SYD or SFO then if all else is equal then SFO has to be a better choice.

.

Emphasis on OR.

I'd happily prefer to go via SFO if I can avoid SYD and LAX.

QF doing BNE-SFO-JFK - dreaming......... mind you, UA, VA etc dont do it either

I also think if they want more people arriving into SFO, they need to encourage the airlines to improve the flight options. Pretty lacklusture options (incl cabin choices) compared to LAX for example.

What is the point of advertising to PAX to use SFO as their USA entry point?

This will certainly help UA with their daily flight from SYD to SFO direct and the additional QF service...but shouldn't there be more lobbying of the airlines for additional SFO services?

And how did Nonews come up with 11 daily services to SFO? Even with what they listed (UA/QF and 7 NZ flights that makes only 9).

Since when do you expect nonews to have a degree of accuracy :?:

Codeshares probably... although that piece of journalistic excellence is horrendous:

There's a combined 11 flights daily from Sydney to San Francisco non stop with Qantas and United and seven with Air New Zealand from Auckland. All other cities need to connect via Sydney, or LA or Auckland.

Or did they just copy from a poorly worded press release?

Yes.. I was thinking for my next MEL-ORD trip going MEL-(SYD?)-NRT-ORD for something different... only issue is no drinks service on AA NRT-ORD...

Anyone done this?
JAL does NRT-ORD and is still OW.Sorry i have only done it in J-NRT-ORD on JAL,ORD-NRT in AA.
The one problem going BNE-NRT-USA is that the only flight you connect to is the JAL JFK flight-once did the NRT-JFK on AA and only just made the connection. For the other destinations it is overnighting at NRT.JAL do put you up-used to be for Y as well but that may have gone.

Although SFO is not a hub for AA there are several flights a day to DFW.Also direct flights to ORD and not to mention AS connections available if you are on a Globalex ticket.
However if going to the East coast my preferred way is via NRT and miss California completely.

I'm heading to NY in May - would be very keen to avoid the LAX transit but stay with oneworld. Any idea where I can get decent J fares (presume you're talking about JL?) for this trip? Have read somewhere there are QF/AA fares out there that go via NRT...

The JAL J companion fare to JFK is $5549-but ends 28/2.It includes taxes. It is for travel 4/10 to 6/10

Actually take out the word daily, and subsitute with weekly and it would be correct. 7 on UA + 4 on QF a week = 11. Then seven on NZ via AKL.

I prefer going through SFO, but one downside is if connecting with AA, unlike in LAX, the Admirals Club in SFO doesn't have showers. I really like a shower before what can sometimes be a full travel day within the US.
