Hi AFF knowledge base,

I have an interesting question that I’m hoping the collective AFF brains trust might be able to help with. Next month I’m flying from SYD-SFO-23hr_stop_over-PHL with QF and AA. Does anyone know if QF will be able to check the bags SYD-PHL enabling me to free myself of my bags before the SFO-PHL flight (seems like a better option than lugging them into town)? All the flights are on a single PNR.

Appreciate any help or experience with this one.

Thanks for the luggage storage tip - that idea had crossed my mind, but I'd seen some negatively towards it so it's good to know it worked for you. We might give that one a go.

We had a good experience in DXB the other year where they circulated for 23hrs 53min, so was hoping for something similar in SFO. Hardly a life threatening situation either way.

You can only politely request they be tagged through.

Note that you'll have to collect bags in SFO anyway - if they are tagged through to PHL from SYD then there should not be an issue with redeposit at SFO.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As serfty suggests, you will need to collect bags but should be able to hand them off again.

Then grab the BART into town, I think about $8 each way.

Yep. BART from the airport station to the downtown SF stations is currently $7.75 each way. Trip takes about 30 mins each way.
I just use my Clipper card (I have IC fare payment cards for every city I've been to that had them available), though the old mag stripe single use tickets are still available.

An after event update for anyone that is interested in this in the future. The Qantas domestic check-in agent tried very hard to check us right through to PHL, but the system wouldn't let her (even though she tried to override it). So in the end we had to collect our massive pile of bags and lug them into SFO town and back.

Worked out alright in the end, but would have been more convenient (obviously) if we'd been able to check our bags right through from AUS - PHL.
