Going to book an EK award out of MEL, but a separate award booking or the domestic BNE-MEL flight (this is so I can keep an Aus POS for other additional flights).

Trying to decide whether to choose the flight which gets their 3hrs before the International flight, or 4hrs. As I understand even though it is on separate PNR's QF at BNE will check bags through and also issue boarding passes, so it seems it should just be a simple transfer through security.

Is 4hrs too much time?

No. If anything goes wrong it is a little more time to recover. Especially since you're not protected in case of misconnection.

You'll need the extra time if @JohnK is travelling on the same day.:p

What's the point in doing it on a separate ticket? Unless your final destination is in the middle east or Asia, the points required will be the same whether you start from BNE or MEL as any other EK destination would likely be the US/CA/South America/Europe which would all be a zone 10 redemption. QF and EK are on the same award table so don't get penalised for crossing between the two award tables.
