Hi All,

Just spent over $3K on flexible economy tickets MEL-LAX for short visit, and found out that it costs 72,000 FF points to go on upgrade wait in each direction. Then I realized that if I really wanted to go J class, I should probably have spent 92,000 FF points per direction and only paid a few hundred dollars in 'taxes'. As I am platinum, it seems I have a reasonable chance of getting the upgrade but am now questioning my approach (operator said J still wide open and indicated that I am at the front of the queue - unless a CL customer applies).

I like a window seat, and am now in 56A up and 56K back. Should I instead cancel the points upgrade, relocate back to a row in the very front of economy (not a window) in the hope of getting a invitation through to J for free? [I saw from another post that seating position is a vital factor in getting upgraded in this way.]

Do many people pay 72000 points (one way) for such upgrades?

What dis-advantage would I suffer if I just purchased J with points outright?

If I decide to stay in economy, should I request the emergency door - what is the emergency exit seat like, e.g. more leg room / less space because of exit door?

Final note: I own my company, so effectively pay my own travel costs, and like to save points use for non-tax deductable family travel purposes. If I was in J, the main advantge that I imagine I would derive (that I really care about) is unlimited laptop usage and better sleeping.

Thanks,
Paul.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Since you are a Platinum member, you should def request the exit row aisle seat. Lots of extra space. Don't go for the window seat since the legroom is partly reduced by the door. Get the best economy seat you can in case the upgrade doesn't clear

If you purchase with points outright, you earn no miles/SCs if that is an issue, but thats about it. The main problem in booking an award flight on that route would be U class availability. Is there availability for an award flight the day you wish to travel?
