My wife and I are flying to Italy from Manila return with a transit at Doha. We paid for Business class fares but paying the huge fees for seat selection seems unreasonable. If we don't pay for seat selection are we stillliable to be seated togther? Are there any other risks we might face by not preselecting seats? Thak you all.

You should be able to select seats together at check-in, based on whatever’s left over.

(If it’s an award ticket though and you have status with Qantas/VA, get your FF number swapped to take advantage of free seat selection.)

You should be able to select your seats for free once "on-line" check in opens - usually opens up to 48 hours before departure. This has worked about 50% of the time for me. If not then try at the gate. QR, for us anyway, normally seems to sit you together automatically. In our case we then have to try to get separate window seats. So far QR have always automatically seated us together and we have to then try to get separate window seats.

I’m going to answer honestly here… If everyone has paid for seating, they are not going to change other peoples paid seat selection for you to sit together. If you paid for seating, do you think it acceptable that it then gets changed after you paid so others can sit together. I know it sounds harsh, but that’s the reality.
