So I'm currently sitting in row 3 waiting for push back this morning and it occurs to me that I don't have a seat mate in 3B - nor did I on the previous flight - 3E, 4B and 4E were and are all similarly unoccupied.

Have VA actually listened to feedback and started blocking seats??

Possibly. Although two weeks ago I was offered 3B or 3E in the lounge. I declined and kept my window seat back in 7.

No. Frequently (recently) there are bodies in the 3,4,5 "B/E" seats on semi full aircraft. If I were you, I'd be happy for the shadows but even two weeks ago, I was told in the lounge that they gave me a shadow, but it turned out to be a very "solid" shadow and the plane was not full.

No. I was seated 3F today SYD-MEL and the chap next to me absolutely owned that armrest. Whatever dude, middle-seat guy has first dibs I suppose. But his leap-frogging of 3D-guy upon belts-off had me thinking he has some insecurities. From my eavesdropping he appears to be in the car dealership industry so, you know, your swimming with flea-infested sharks I suppose.

when i book for 2 of us I book A and C and usually no person in B
but when I had to take C and D found people take blocks of 2 so always have a person in the middle.

doubtful, I've had plenty of flights where I'm the only WP in a row, and my row is full, but the reds across the aisle have middle seat empty (or a row to themselves)

I have been wanting to ask the same question, I am a WP and routinely fly with my partner, when assigning seats would like to choose A/C or D/F combo, but haven't had faith in the shadow and would rather sit with my partner then be separated.

Has as anyone had any success or tips in ensuring the shadow holds? Or just luck of the draw?

Yes - book via the call centre and ask for an 'EXST'. Guaranteed to have no-one beside you. They will even waive the phone booking fee.

We've tried playing that game a few times and it has rarely worked, and we end up swapping with the person in the middle, who is of course always happy to swap. I've made partner gold now, so might give it a go again and see if WP+SG manages to hold the shadow.

I really wish VA would get to grips with this, it's the most annoying thing about flying with them.

I wish you luck. I got partner plat for my +1 and I cannot ever recall that ploy working for us (and I tried it lots of times). Maybe it did once, but I cannot recall. The only difference is we don't usually swap with middle (although we have been known to). Almost a third of a century together means we can do without holding hands and staring wistfully into each others eyes for a bit! ;).......3A and 3C are more important!
