Mallaig doesn't have a lot going for it - there are a lot of day trippers that come in on the steam train. I caught the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale on the Isle of Skye ....

When did you travel and did you have to prebook the ferry?

Im guessing the mid-day crowds are the bus tour groups, which is why early morning/late arvo is always good. We've got 2 nights booked at the Eileen Doonan Cottage (opposite castle) but thanks for the lookout info, will tell hubby :)

I was there the last week of August and it was a long weekend as well.

I think there might be a cottage right next to the castle for rent as well.

I booked the ferry the day before and there was only one available and that was the last one of the day. As you're driving to Mallaig there are flashing signs saying last ferry has spaces available but when I got there, the guy said to me have you booked and I said yes and he said good so I'm guessing some people missed out. The day after I came over there was a huge storm and some of the ferries were cancelled so not sure what they do then whether they just run them later and more often

I didn't like those single land roads in the highlands much - somehow I was the one who had to reverse up. :)

Great photos VPS; looking forward to reading more.

A few times on the hairy roads I sat firmly behind someone much larger and more aggressive which was handy when a large Merc didn't look it was going to budge and the guy in front of me just kept going forward until the Merc reversed - at one stage I was going uphill around a blind corner and because I'm not very tall all I could see was my bonnet - a bit disconcerting!!
