I'm trying to get some airport info from travellers that have done the SCL trip before.
I will be returning from SCL in the new year. The QF codeshare flight with LAN leaves at 12.30am in the morning.
I will be arriving the night before (12:00am) from Antofagasta. I have a layover of 24 hours and trying to figure out a few things.
We will be staying 1 night at the Holiday Inn Airport Hotel. Since checkout at the hotel is at 10am there is a lot of time to kill.

Is it possible to check baggage straight thru from a Domestic LAN flight to the international LAN flight to Sydney with a 24 hour layover?
if not, when does the check in opens for international flights to get maybe early access to the lounge. I will be flying in Business

Not sure if this is the right forum for this

For LAN in SYD, check-in open 3 hours before hand, this is not checked-in by Qantas either.

We stayed at the SCL Holiday Inn in March and requested an additional day room charge as our flight didnt depart until 9pm.

Something to consider and we thought well worth the additional cost.

As Denali said, Holiday Inns do have day rates, if needed. But they can be expensive. If you wanted to do that, I would reserve it soon. The other option, would be to check out early, leave your bags at the hotel and head into Santiago for the day. Summer, so the weather should be warm. Come back to the hotel around 9pm and check in.

Check in is the usual 3 hours. As for checking your luggage through from Antofagasta, you probably could, but I'd advise against. Only because long layovers are probably the most common reason for lost luggage. You might find you arrive in SYD and your luggage is still in SCL.

Santiago is a wonderful city to spend the day in. The Holiday Inn is functional but not the place to spend the day. Transvip do a service into town for just over USD20 and it takes around 30 mins depending on traffic. Alternatively Uber is super safe and reliable. There are great restaurants to have a lovely lunch at.

If you are travelling on an Australian passport you need to factor in US$117 to leave SCL airport.

Yes, only payable at the airport. Its called the 'reciprocity fee', charged by Chile because Australia charges its citizens for a visa. There are rope lines and booths before and separate from immigration where you pay and get a docket in your passport, then you proceed to immigration. Credit cards accepted :)

I'd definitely take a day trip into downtown Santiago - its great for walking around.

Thanks for all the replies, i didn't know about the reciprocity fee. We will have spent 5 weeks in Chile and Santiago prior to departure so will see how we feel on the day. All your answers certainly helped me making a more informed decision.
Thanks

To clarify a few things - my understanding is that the OP is travelling from Antofogasta to SCL for this stopover - so they will already have had to pay the reciprocity fee when they first arrived in the country. They will not have to pay it again for the day layover in SCL (the reciprocity fee covers you for multiple entries for 3 mths)

And expanding on Rooflyer's advice, that fee is paid when you get off the plane but BEFORE immigration - when you get off the plane you will have to walk down some steps towards immigration. DON'T immediately jump in the immigration queue which is immediately in front of you - instead make a hard left turn and you will find a few booths where you pay the fee - THEN jump in the immigration queue :)

For that return trip with the layover, can you clarify exactly what times you are doing? I understood that you arrive at midnight? And leave just after midnight the next day? (Which would be on the LAN metal flight?)

If you are flying in business, when you go to check in at SCL you should use LATAM's vip checkin - it is to the very far left of the main departures area, up a flight of stairs (or lift). It is not that easy to find if it is your first time. So remember, go into the departure checkin area, head WAY to the left, up the stairs, and along a narrow walkway until you find it. (There are one or two tiny shops /offices before you get there)

Using that vip checkin is very quick, and has a dedicated emigration booth and security which is fantastic and swift. This takes you into a foyer where you access the lounge, which you would be entitled to.

Great lounge, decent food, very good wine, etc. Has showers, internet, and even on the top floor (it has two floors) there is a little sleeping room with four beds. I have managed to kill many 12hr stopovers there without getting too bored. It has (also on the top floor) some great lounge seats with fantastic views of the airfield - in case you like watching planes :)

So definitely, if you dont feel like touring the city, you could survive there is necessary. (BTW to access the rest of the airside shops/restaurants/etc you go out of the lounge and will find a lift or stairs that take you down a floor to the main airside departures area. When you come back to the lounge it is not exactly well signed - very discreet - but it is there.

Last comment, regarding the luggage. I agree with Boca68 that I would not be entirely happy doing that, even if it is possible. Mainly because I distrust their ability to ensure it is not temporarily lost. I am sure the hotel would hold your luggage for you if you decide to do the city thing. If you want to do the lounge thing though, then I would try to do the check-all-the-way-through from Antofogasta - I have arrived very early for flights at SCL and even at the vip checkin they were very reluctant to checkin baggage many hours before flight. I won (hold excellent status with LATAM and QF) but I suspect I was lucky. In any case, you can try to checkin early, and if they refuse, you can go back to Plan B and leave it at the hotel and do a city tour.

I hope all this makes sense and is helpful :)

Further to above, I just checked my flight tracker thingy and according to it I have been through SCL 62 times so far. So I will be very embarrassed if I have given you a "bum steer" :)

That place is one of my homes - I even talk to the lift in the lounge - I always go up the lift in the lounge to the second floor, and love to hear the lift voice that announces you have arrived at the "feeeeth floor". You will get this if you do it :)

Thank you very much juddles for all the information, this is really helpful.
This is my first trip to Chile and i'm very exited about it. I may try your suggestions to get an early checkin.
We will have spent by then considerable time in Santiago and surroundings so we might not necessarily wanting a trip back into the city.
I guess we decide on the day.
Any other travel tips for Chile / Santiago you can pass on would be very much appreciated. you can also pm me if yo like
