Brisbane|Qantas|emergency

A Qantas passenger says he feared for his life when oxygen masks deployed on a flight to Brisbane last night.

QF552 passenger Mark Franchi said people around him "froze" when a recorded message came over the intercom advising passengers to use oxygen masks which then deployed.

The media will be all over this!

Yep, b/c it's much more serious than the EK "mishap" in MEL.......
They love bringing Qantas down.

I remember last year there was an article on news.com.au with the heading 'Qantas jets collide' It turned out the two jets were being moved around a hanger at Avalon where they were being repainted!!

Isn't it better to have a false alarm and have the masks drop when not needed, rather than have the opposite situation where they are needed but not deploy?

Agreed. If the masks drop down and work, why would you "fear for your life".
On the other hand, If the masks were required and didn't drop down, then I would fear for my life.

Yes, but the phrase "I needed O2 and Qantas supplied it" won't sell newspapers.

Ummm.... if the oxygen masks deployed, I would be rather worried... I am not surprised that people were in fear; seems perfectly normal reaction

More worrying perhaps is that people around him apparently froze. I guess it's always going to be a shock, but you'd think the idea would be to do what you've been instructed to do, as quickly as possible.

Of course I know, until you're in the situation it's easy to say what to do.

Lucky it was a false alarm.

I feel sorry for the poor people who have to repack the masks as I hear it a real pain to do so.

Potentially, but also some might get damaged etc - was it not the case also that they perish as they get older (a la QF Manila incident - some rows didnt work, although that may have been due to the damage!) and get replaced anyway?

That's true.

If the oxygen masks drop down suddenly it could be a sign that something is wrong. I know I would not be comfortable and if the people around also freeze and look confused then this maybe enough to frighten someone and could possibly be enough to trigger a panic/anxiety attack or something worse....

A bit unhygienic hey?

LMAO!!
Thank you that comment has made my day!;)

The last thing in the world I would be worried about if masks dropped from above would be the possibility of catching a cold :D:D
