I got a text from "Centrelink" yesterday "regarding my allowance". As I've never dealt with Centrelink in my life I was not fooled but it's a new low.

Presumably not alot of cash in those bank accounts.

I haven't bought from ebay for a while however my last few Australia Post deliveries have all been followed up with a 'scam' sms that I have had a problem with my delivery. Maybe the scammer is via Australia post vs the online shopping sites?

Yes, there is definately some hack when you order from Ebay for scam "failed address" issues. Almost always happens, Doesn't happen wioth other suppliers for AP, only EBay. I complained to EBay but just got a pat on the head.

Impossible to trace from the user end.

Been getting an increasing number of spam calls to my mobile - always a different Melbourne or Sydney landline number. I always just decline and they rarely leave a message although one just now did say 'Hello MEL-World' before realizing that no-one was there. My blocked number list is getting quite long.

Usually Mygov sends you sn email that there is a message in Mygov for you yo read there, within Mygov.
I hold an email address for my not too computer savvy mum, she has a pension from Centrelink.
They always ask me (more so, her) for a private super review amount, but never has she had an direct sms from "Centrelink".
Its always an email asking you to log into Mygov.
Official address is https://www.my.gov.au%%
Remove percentage mark.
I think somewhere said Centrelink will never send sms/emails like that in the run of the mill spam scam.

I have received three MyGov scam messages on my mobile in the past few days. They weren’t great quality to be honest, but they may fool a few people.

Exactly, MyGov always sends a text to read your MyGov inbox. Why are people even fooled by such trickery?

TA as in Tony our PM is more into his pet project.
The fake Mygov sms and emails dont seem to of importance, even though Aussies are loosing millions in scams.
Setting up the new ACCC sub agency is just an easy cop out.
Nothing changes, 1.25 months since it was set up...
And my mum got another e toll sms few days back.
We are doing the work by blocking and deleting.
Few secs it takes, for one person to do, but if 50,000 Aussies have to block and delete scams per week, thats lots of time wasted.

Maybe there just ISN’T anything that can be done quickly to block scam communication, short of something over-invasive that nobody would accept?

Here's something funny that I did not think was possible.

Someone fraudulently used my ANZ Visa card to the tune of USD395 or AUD673.

They've now refunded USD395 or AUD657.

Seriously? I'm down $16 due to commission or exchange rate for a fraudulent transaction? Very good ANZ. That'll keep shareholders happy. I'll wait a few days and whinge and whinge.

Looks like same occurred with Virgin Money earlier this year but that time it was only $8.

Were all these cards used in Thailand when you were there?
I know you mentioned the other time, with the other card.
If all these cards have been used in Thailand, maybe that is where its all occurring.
Ie, where the "purchases" were initiated.

Have they even recruited yet? Have the staff properly started in their roles yet?

First they need to draft a few policies, consult, and fight off politicians & lobby groups & other distractions. That's six months, if we are lucky and they bulldoze a few things on their way. Then there's the time for companies to implement any potential new regulations. We are at the one-year mark, at the minimum. And so the story goes and we keep skipping over futile attempts to con us.

The agency has been given 3 years (not weeks or months) to get stuff done. If you see a real change in the first 6-12 months, they've been remarkably productive for a government agency.

Ie started and completed the P&P processes by now.
Pity that copying logos is so easy.
Pity that spoofing can still be done, as well as piggybacking on real bank sms senders.
Next we will have fake yes and no referendum stuff from scammers.

- I used 28 Degrees in Thailand last year and card was compromised not long after. Suspect it was BKK duty free where she grabbed my card to swipe
- I used Virgin money in Thailand but this time I kept card on me all the time and it was compromised 2 months later
- I used ANZ Visa in Thailand and again kept card on me all the time and it was compromised 4 months later

So possibly someone, somehow selling details down the track.

Surely I'm not the only one that uses credit card in Thailand? @drron / @mrs.dr.ron? @Hvr? @AIRwin?

Back again next month and will more than likely use 28 degrees again with HSBC backup card this time. Note that I don't do that many transactions. Most purchases are cash and that's how I prefer to operate in Thailand.

Do you use atm in Australia? Been some arrests recently of foreign nationals who had installed card scanners to atm's.

No ATMs used with any of those cards.

I'm really not happy with ANZ and the part they play in protecting scammers. I said it earlier

- low value transaction rejected on eBay as going $1 over credit limit
- transaction at Coles/Woolworths rejected as it would take card over credit limit
- TPG unable to take $20 monthly internet payment as that would push card over credit limit

But

- $673 fraudulent transaction taking card $270 over credit limit approved

How? Card settings have not changed. Same phone number. Same email address.
