Just checking I am correct in looking @ sc's I would get with upgrade kuppmz fare (booked in first as two class cabins for:

ewr-ord miles 719 sc 90
ord-okc 693 90
okc-dfw 175 60
dfw-ewr 1372 120

I'm so unsure of doubting myself in my arrangements this trip. Thanks in advance

Those are the correct SC’s for F.

I’m not sure you can fly F to OKC though as Mileage Monkey seems to say no. Perhaps someone else can check that.

They all appear to be correct expect for ORD-OKC. It should only be 15 SCs based on 1 class services only being available ORD-OKC on American Eagle and American Connection (Chautauqua) operating this route. OKC-DFW should have 2 class aircraft.

Why not route via DFW both ways?

Thanks for replies. Not flying direct ewr-dfw as the fare for economy changes dramatically but not so for upgrade. I'm thinking of my friends' money.

I thought I did see a two class fare from ord-dfw, i'll have another look this next weekend.
cheers

ORD-DFW is not the issue. I was referring to ORD-OKC as per your original post. As far as I am aware there are no 2 class aircraft on the dates I looked.

Normally KUPP's (and their counterparts) book into full Y when there is no F cabin, so it should be 30 sc's not 15.

I stand corrected.

You learn something new everyday....

I am confused. Is OKC or DFW your destination from New York?

Hi, I had 2 join, so I could add to this Instant Upgrade discussion.

xUPPs, with a segment on a single class aircraft, can book into THREE different QFF SC earning levels;
  • No Status Credits (e.g. Q)
  • Discount Economy (e.g. N)
  • Full Economy (e.g. Y)
Always, always, always - check Eagle/Connection flights etc. As the difference between expecting F SCs and earning NO SCs can be quite disappointing.

Personally I have travelled on KUPPs that have booked into each of Q, N & Y on Eagle - so beware; as there is NO NORMAL. (e.g. Even on the same PNR/Record Locator, I have had my flight to Canada book into N & the flight out into Y!)

Welcome to AFF dk4!

That is a very informative first post. Thanks.

Welcome, and thanks for that info. The only time I've seen a xUPP book into a non-Y fare class in Economy is where an xUPP has been joined onto a normal fare due to there not being a xUPP from the source to destination airport.

Would be interested in any city pair examples you have.

The AA booking site (US and UK versions - not so much the AU version) is quite good with showing where a fare books into, so it does pay to double check before the purchase.

I have been looking into a few KUPP runs around the US for June; can a TA book them or is it only available online.

Looking at flying BWI-DFW-LAX connecting with a 5 hour break to a Qantas flight home, yes it would be cheaper to go to another LA area airport but I haven't really got the time or interest to change airports. Once you make the booking is it worth while to ring Qantas to link the 2 bookings.

My experience is that pricing is as you suggest.

I too have seen some examples where the AAA-ORD-BBB & AAA-DFW-BBB Instant Upgrade journeys price out the same & other examples where they price out differently (i.e. when one segment via ORD is on a single class aircraft, and both segments via DFW are on dual class aircraft). As you point out, this may be AA.com offering customers which ever pricing option works out lowest/best, thus either –

Price the whole trip at xUPP rate AAA-BBB, and automatically downgrade on the Eagle/Connection flight to FULL Y, (when the price for an xUPP AAA-ORD + DISCOUNT Y ORD-BBB would work out more expensive than the current xUPP offer AAA-BBB).

OR

Price the trip as one segment xUPP and the other segment in DISCOUNT Y, (when the price for an xUPP AAA-ORD + DISCOUNT Y ORD-BBB would work out less expensive than the current xUPP offer AAA-BBB).

My personal travel examples, which I refer to in my post, are ORD-YOW, ORD-YYZ & MIA-EYW (as end segments to my destinations).

My Toronto example is not a round trip, (i.e. my journey start and end points [to/from Toronto] are in different cities). On the inbound flight it was significantly cheaper to fly via ORD (as it would book me into a discount Y class on the Eagle flight) however on the outbound from Toronto it was the same price whether I flew via ORD (downgraded to FULL Y) or DFW (in F).

Obviously, spotting these pricing scenarios helps when forcing “useful” connections via the multi-city routing function on AA.com & AA.co.uk, as you note.
