I was on a flight a month or so back with DJ and being in row 3 we had no IFE (most of my SYD-TSV flights have no IFE) unlike the rest of the plane. They offered us the Galaxy tablets and I thought I'd give it a go although I had some work to do. After about five minutes I couldn't hear through the lousy ear buds properly so I handed it back and went back to work.

Yesterday on TSV-SYD I got offered one again - I think they had spare and offered them to the first few rows (no IFE?) so I took one again. I turned the volume to max - got a little warning about damaging my hearing - and watched a movie. However it was almost impossible to hear the quiet dialogue without cupping my ears to my head. I wish I'd brought proper headphones which may have cut down the external noise enough to hear but otherwise I wouldn't bother again. I assume they have the sound turned down to a level where idiots can't burst their eardrums but it's way too low. I didn't bother the FA as I assumed they couldn't do anything - seeing as the last time I'd used it I'd also had the same problem.

Anyone else used these? I don't have an ipad or the like but I thought it wasn't a bad unit, just the sound made it hard work.

I noticed last mhey have increased the volume available (with the warning), it was definitly an improvement but it was still better to use my NC's.

I wonder if the backroom boffins actually test these on an operating aircraft with the ear-buds they supply,

It will be BYO very shortly anyway, so many will not have to worry soon.

I find it pretty hard to hear my iPad on planes even with the volume turned all the way up. However at full volume its too loud for me, but I still cant hear the speech properly if Im watching a TV show, so it much just be the background noise.

I am yet to invest in some noise cancelling headphones however having used them before I think they will work, something along the lines of Audio-Technica ones as they are about $150 for 80% noise cancelling I believe

I use the Audio Technica bluetooth - the only place I find that the noise cancelling actually really works is in flight so that is a boon. They are a tad dorky though and the clip on cable does get in the way a bit.

On a recent flight to Adelaide I had no problems hearing the sound from the iPad that a little Miss was using in the row behind me. They were mostly the really really annoying game sounds :evil:, the NC headphones helped but did not eliminate nearly enough. During takeoff and landing the iPad sounds were replaced by high pitched screams.

Obviously DJ should look at changing to iPads or a little Miss for their IF Enjoyment...

I got some good quality headphones for my Galaxy 10.1 Tab, the ones supplied are rank. Never had an issue with the good quality sesinehemmer (or however you spell it, too lazy too google it sorry).

Never had any issue with the volume level persay, yes the warning is a little off putting if you like to listen to loud music.

As an aside, I think the warning is a 'feature' of the Android operating system, rather than VA looking out for our health. Since applying the most recent Android upgrade my phone gives the same warning.

The headphones supplied by Virgin are cough and and def not NC. I got some Samsung headphones with my Galaxy 7.7 and they are awesome on the plane, although even they struggle in the middle section of the plane. No issues in Business or the first couple of rows. I recently flew Adl - Mel and was given a Tab. The Virgin headphones were useless, but the Samsung headphones were heaps better. Having said that, I think Virgin have reduced the volume on the Tabs, as my 7.7 was def louder.

Got my hands on one for the first time today sitting in row 3. Using the new Apple 'EarPods' that came with my iP 5 I was able to hear fine with 2 clicks off full volume, could do with a little boost I reckon.

Does anyone know if at the moment they are streaming to the tabs or are they preloaded with content as I am reasonably sure I heard the seatbelt sign 'ding' through my headphones while I was watching something, that or I am hearing things [like always!].

Never had an issue with the good quality sesinehemmer (or however you spell it, too lazy too google it sorry).

A few markets in Bangkok sell sesinhemmer, they often do bundle deals with the Ralf Loren Polos .

On a more serious note I do agree a good set of headphones make all the difference, been happy with my Ultimate Ears 400s this year, although the comply tips now need replacing, they seem to block out most noise while allowing the tablet to be more than loud enough, looking forward to the streaming to see how much content will be on offer.
