SA and QF Codeshare to end with one airline stopping JNB to Oz flights?

If South African Airways had a decent European network then it actually wouldn't be a bad connection partner from Perth to European destinations?

Well, SA flies to FRA, LHR, MUC and ZRH. And the airline does belong to a certain alliance, n'est çe pas? ;)

Yeah I was thinking of flying SAA business class once or twice out of Perth to either Europe, US or South America on one of US Air redemptions another option and so I hope they keep flying it...

Depends on whether you take into consideration that the SAA product is not that great ;)

Re: 2nd March 2012 - South African Codeshare Extension Nixed.

I think its a bad thing, what they will end up doing is turning it from a 'duopoly' to Monopoly.

It's a small point, the route is only a non-stop duopoly from Perth and Sydney (to JNB).......Currently Air Mauritius also fly the route from Australia to Johannesburg (via Port Louis) from Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.
You can also fly Air Austral from Sydney to Johannesburg via Reunion Islands (yes, the flights recommence from Mar 24, 2012)

In addition, even if Qantas pulls out, and you desire QFF earning, then you can still fly the QF/KQ codeshare flight to Nairobi via Bangkok.
I'd also mention the CX flight to JNB via HKG but I've done that before in Y and in the shell seats, it is a fate worse than death.

AFF members may also be interested to know that since last month (Feb 2012), EK started flights to both Lusaka, Zambia and Harare, Zimbabwe.

That service lacks the certainty of continuation for business use at present, Air Austral have had terrible loads ex SYD, and have threatened to withdraw!

Merely postulating

Without codeshares QF to drop the direct and fly SYD-PER-JNB,
this will hurt SA ex-PER and cause them to drop out altogether.

Or on the flipside, SA to stay on the PER-JNB route and codeshare with DJ from PER to SYD/MEL/BNE/ADL...

Not such a crazy idea from a DJ perspective - another 'partner' tapping into a continent currently without a partner, as well as services again to JNB. Gives SA an Australian network missing through having no Star partner in Australia, and greater access for their passengers into eastern Australian ports.

The could also then sell their RTW fare that used to tie with Virgin Atlantic JNB-LHR-LAX.

Bet John Borghetti would love to do a deal with SAA and force QF off SYD-JNB!

Re: 2nd March 2012 - South African Codeshare Extension Nixed.

I have read different things about SAA business class, although it probably is variable... But as another option out of Perth I was thinking of trying it one time, unless steered away from it...

They seem to have 180 lie flat beds on quite a few of their planes... Seeing Thai only seem to offer recliner seats from what i can see etc (will try in May) it may be comparable or better???

I've flown SA between Perth and Johannesburg two or three times in J and thoroughly recommend it. The seats are excellent, the food very nice, the amenity kits fantastic.
