Rumour: Cathay to replace economy seats

I would prefer those seats on a day flight as I generally don't sleep, but at night and when you want to sleep they are horrible!!

I normally fly J, not on once or twice a year someone else pays for my flight and I end up in Y. I will never fly CX (Y) until the seats are replaced. I'd almost fly anyone else instead.

Luckily for us CX have a lot of day flights, which I personally prefer.

The Mrs and I are on CX254 LHR-HKG in January, in Y.
Not looking forward to it.

It's an award flight, and sadly that's all my remaining points could get us.

Leaves LHR at 22:05 :(

I'm sure that the change will be good news to those who hate the seat.

What got my attention was the revamp of F & J which were only recently introduced as well as the introduction of Y+. I heard that many didn't like J as it was too cramped.

Sounds like their last cabin overhaul didn't go down too well with the public in general.

Well 3 months have passed since the announcement, does anyone know if they have commenced rolling out the new Y seats?

I have not tried the shell seats yet as I have not flown CX long-haul economy but the article mentions moving them to short-haul aircraft. I believe these seats would be highly suitable for someone like me and would love to try them out.

Does anyone know? This thread on Flyertalk seems to suggest at least 2-3 years away.

You'd love them John. :)

After a horror 8hr (dep 0030 ex-DXB) to HKG in these, I feared I may not walk again. For less than 2hrs, no problem. The person reclining doesnt impact the space, but if you recline, you lose all knee room if you're over 5'8" (base slides forward). They also dont seem to recline as much. The "airbag" on the seatbelt doesnt help matters either as it makes one side of the seatbelt really rigid and difficult to position comfortably.

I used to like CX but this flight really put me off them for long-haul in Y. Hope the new seats turn out better (we need some photos!).

I had the sad fortune to fly LHR to HKG (nearly 12hrs) in a CX Y shell seat (CX254) last week (as foreshadowed in my post above). Yes, they truly are terrible seats.

Reclining is fairly pointless - as docjames said, all it does is jam your knees into the seat in front, and it doesn't change your seating angle much anyway. Aside from the reclining issue, they are also generally uncomfortable seats with not much padding, and there seemed to be bits of seat jutting into me however I tried to sit. CX254 is a night flight to boot (leaving LHR at 22:05), so I was trying to get a little sleep, but found it nearly impossible.

I would never fly in them for that duration again.

Try them from MEL-HKG-FCO with no-stopover. I'm only a short person but I really felt crippled after that one and dreaded the flight home. I call them the CX "slump" seats as that is what they do when reclining, just slump you forward a bit so your back bends like a banana and your knees jam in front. Horrendous. NEVER again. I will never to CX longhaul in Y again while they still have those seats.

Cheers
