Yet another informed and educating piece from the SMH, its a refreshing change from the dribble most media wants to feed the masses IMHO

They can seem draconian, petty and even pointless: the numerous safety rules that apply to airline passengers.
Contrary to general opinion, however, the various procedures and laws that govern behaviour onboard are applied with good reason, says Australian aviation expert, Trevor Bock.
Bock (through his company Bock Consulting) is a training and safety auditor who regularly works with international airlines and IATA (International Air Transport Association) to ensure compliance and verify safety ratings as well as set safety policy.

Hmm,yeah not a bad article but did they really have to throw in a free plug for his business?imo that rather colors it as a advertising piece instead of
an informative article designed to educate travellers about safety.

Is it just me, or is there a new things amongst certain FF's to keep their smart phones on during descent (and possibly not even on flight mode)? I've been quite taken aback by it, but I've definitely noticed it a few times now. Naturally, it's all done well out of eyesight of the FAs.

Excellent article and the explanations are logical. Of course, that makes you wonder why some airlines don't bother looking after these things. For example, I've had planty of flights where the crew don't worry whether the shades are up or down. In fact once, they announced they were leaving them down to keep the plane cool (and not just while it was at the airbridge either!)

One thing I have always wondered -if the shades are so important how come some aircraft don't have them!

I don't know why but some people seem to think they will get prize if they get off the aircraft in the first 30 seconds.
And for that matter I also see it at the movies and stage shows. Show/flight is over. The aisles are packed solid, the doors aren't probably even open, yet everyone is clambering to get into the aisle even though there's nowhere to go.

You may as well stay seated for one or two minutes till the herd thins out.

Maybe they are in a big hurry so they can stand at the baggage claim for a bit longer.

Could be a number of reasons. Personally, I am one of those. My reasons are:

1) I am over 6' 5" tall and want to get out of the seat and stretch my legs as soon as possible. I don't want to be stuck with my knees on my chin for another 2-3 minutes.
2) I normally travel with no checked luggage. I want to get out of the plane and reach the taxi rank and not be stuck behind another 100 of my fellow passengers. Flying internationally, I don't want to be stuck behind 100 passengers in the customs queue.

The earlier I get off the plane, the quicker I am in a taxi and the quicker I get home.

Good article. I'd wondered about the no phones on tarmac thing. Good to see someone's put some thought into it and it's not just an arbitrary rule for petty tyrants to enforce.

Despite all the time I've spent in airliners, I'm still well out of my comfort zone, and I read the safety cards and listen to the briefings attentively, no matter how many times I've heard it all before. Things can and do go wrong, and if they do I'm not going to have a huge amount of time to study the situation. Or move things out of the way or try to find my shoes to put them on in the dark and the smoke and the screaming.

Meal service aside, I'm always good at keeping my seatbelt on. Tight for the tricky bits and loose for the flight. Full on crashes are rare, but every year there's several reports of passengers being injured in turbulence. If I break an arm or sprain something, that's going to bugger up my carefully planned holiday.
