Hi all,

i am looking at Sydney-NYC flights for early next year in discount Y (I know, a horror for most of you).

i am a lowly bronze, and can't imagine that I'll ever get anything higher on a yearly basis. I do live in hope I may eventually make LTS, but that is still many thousands of SC away.

now the question... I have several options:
syd-lax-jfk
syd-bne-dfw-lga (or ewr, but I don't like that idea)

and then same in reverse (or one option one way, and the other upon return)

i vaguely recall reading on here that the most legs is preferable for obtaining status credits, though I think that would frustrate me to no end (though surely no more than lax frustrates me)

sooo...in my situation where earning SC is nice but in all reality probably not *that* important, which option would you take?

I'd always try for a silly route, but also consider what aircraft are flying those routes. In your case, perhaps just considering what aircraft you'll be on is the way to go. For example, flying to LAX you'd most likely choose an A380, where economy seats aren't too bad, and there are some decent 'free' seats (but as a Bronze it'd cost you $20 to pre-select... still better than nothing). That said, some 747's have been refitted with A380 style seats, so heading to DFW might be better.

Thanks!

looks like the a380s aren't an option, with the flights all using 747s, so I guess it is 6 of one, half a dozen of the other

Have you looked at Air Pacific?

I hadn't actually considered them as an option, though I just did a dummy booking and they were more than twice the price of qantas

NAN LAX can be had for $2000 in business, you could do the whole trip for a little more with some clever combinations and also earn good status and points.

If you went via DFW on QF7 you'd fly SYD-DFW-JFK/LGA. QF8 is via BNE. To mix things up a bit, what about SYD-LAX-JFK-DFW-BNE-SYD?

If you go to DFW Hyatt Regency at airport (about $99 night) is good place to stay a day or so, just 15mins down road via $5 dollar shuttle is one of the largest (real) DFO shopping malls around called Grapevine.
