I'm not familiar with the routing rules QF usually has for J fares MEL-LAX, so I was a bit surprised when I checked them for the sale J fares announced today. Since I don't know if this is common or not, I'm not going to be revealing all the details - I expect many readers will be able to find them out for themselves.

I would expect rules allowing routings such as MEL-LAX, MEL-SYD-LAX and MEL-BNE-LAX (and vv). However, I didn't expect to see MEL-xx_-SYD-LAX, which would give an extra 160 SCs for no extra cost. (You'll have to guess what xx_ is, but it shouldn't be too hard.)

I was able to
find flights with that routing on matrix.itasoftware.com, and expedia.com.au seems to allow them to be booked; however, I couldn't find them on qantas.com using the multi-city search. In fact, it seems like you can route via xx_ on the way back as well, for 320 SCs extra.

While the total cost doesn't put this into status run territory, if you were already planning a MEL-LAX and return trip, this would seem to be a good way to add a bonus 160 or 320 SCs. I wonder whether QF would honour the booking or not...

Most QF fares have various routing rules you can use to take advantage of SC's. I recently flew PRG-LHR-SIN-SYD-CNS-MEL for no extra than PRG-LRH-MEL. The domestic sectors booked into M class (full fare economy ) which resulted in 160SC's extra for SYD-CNS-MEL (double SC promo). Some would say it's mad but I didn't mind it at all.

Sorry but can someone explain how does it gives you extra status credit at no cost? i thought if you are booking it via a place qantas will not count towards the status credit

The only time you wouldn't get more points/SCs is if the flights were on the same flight number. Otherwise, you get them as usual, regardless of money paid etc. E.g. If you went SYD-SIN-LHR all on QF1, you would get the SCs based on the distance between SYD-LHR, but of you went to SIN on (say) QF5 then changed flight number, you'd get SCs for two separate flights, and I think it works out to be more.

more sectors = more status credits. some fares allow you many more sectors than the most direct routing.

That is the Virgin way. QF calculate per leg, provided each leg is on a different flight number. QF1 SYD-LHR will earn as per that distance, where as if you change to QF9 in SIN, that breaks into two separate legs earning wise.
