I would have thought Visa was Visa???

No Visa is not always Visa...when a particular company restricts for whatever reason Credit Cards to local cards only.

For example in Paris foreign CC's only work in one type of ticket machine that you will find when travel on their trains and Metro and not the other.

But anyway in this case the barrier has been either 100% removed or greatly removed.
great timing for me as I am in Italy this Easter. without being able to use as Aussie CC I would not have been able to grab the excellent Mini fares.

Well there seems to be a heap of knowledge of how to get around Italy on this thread so I'll butt in with another question that hopefully others might help with. Looking to travel to Panarea (little island off the coast of Scicily in the Aeolian group) from Rome in late October/early November this year. I'd like to do it by train & ferry/hydrofoil but I can''t seem to work it out (the trenitalia & ferry websites are a complete mystery to me, keeps coming back with no connections). If anyone has any suggestions on how to get there I'd be really appreciative.
