Ok so they are starting soon and I'm already sick of the advertising.

However once they commence I'm sure I'll watch at least a few events and if they feature Australians winning a medal they'll be repeated ad nauseum.

There will of course be lots of comment here so let the Games begin.

Here's wishing safe Olympics and smashing of games records.

First games in 12 years I won't be working at.. After seeing some stories and pics I'm kinda glad now too!

My son is heading there today. He will dress down with no watch nor any display of having money.

Somehow I'm just not enthusiastic about the Rio games.

My feeling exactly. And to hear that the Olympic launching ramp was wrecked over the weekend doesn't do anything to change that.

On the other hand, I found these beauties on the weekend during a major clean-up :) .

Ah the good old days of the Sydney Olympics. The high water mark for us. The world has not been the same since...

Remember how everyone was going to rent their houses out for $2K per week? Ha, how we laughed!

(...no ones laughing now, it really does cost $2K to rent in a lot of Sydney)

Looking forward to the opening and closing ceremonies as always :p

Unfortunately, local TV here usually only shows sports Australians are in, and it gets a little boring watching replays eventually when there are many great events/games happening at the same time!

Well! took a bit of finding, but ... (apologies for carp pics - not only wrong speed film, but camera-holder excitement shake!) :)

Olympic Boulevard, and the stadium in as-built configuration.

The Opening Ceremony opening ... the horses .. and the machines towards the end.

Aussies enter the Athletes' Parade!! AND - if you look carefully in the middle of the RH pic, you'll see Cathy Freeman sneaking out ... we thought to have an early night of it !!

Especially when she wasn't one of the final torch-bearers ...

Ah! It all makes sense. After a technical glitch at right, the finale!

Who didn't appreciate the Beach Volleyball? Especially the spectator on the right!

Fantastic photos.
Just goes to show the Sydney Olympics were the best (besides being cheap to get to) :)
Good grief, 16 years ago but it seems like only yesterday.

Makes me wish I'd got to more events. But had a newborn and a one year old back then! Now they're nearly finished school. Where does the time go?

For these games I don't think I'm alone in thinking there isn't really that much of a build-up. It's sort of been "the Olympics are coming" for a while but I still don't really comprehend that it starts in a few days. Compare that with Sydney. I remember the excitement when the sign (on James Ruse Drive in Sydney) counting down the days to the games dropped below 1000!
I heard talk on ABC radio yesterday that the reason for the lack of anticipation might be there's no clear 'hero' for Australia at these games unlike in the past. I dunno.

Channel 7 is trying to build the hype single handedly.

With professionals pretending not to be for two weeks I don't care much, of course I'll flick around and watch some of it but I care not if Australia gets a gold a medal. It's how you play the game.
