Has anyone ever done this with success? I was at Hertz the other day and forgot to ask.

I stupidly booked a 5:00am BNE-SYD flight in November and I believe Hertz opens at 5:00am.

I would prefer to avoid paying exorbitant $50+ taxi fare if possible.

Excellent. Don't need to worry about that now.

Hire a car at ~7:00pm and return it ~4:00am. Simple.

As i'm sure you probably know already JohnK, just keep that fuel receipt in the car (usually drivers seat or somewhere obvious) just so the staff checking the car can sight it. If you do get a yellow damage acknowledge slip from the exit gate on departure, best to keep that in the car as well. Enjoy your trip :)

Make sure you take a photo of anything required to be left in the car (reciept!)

Forgot to mention that it worked a treat. Wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing next time. In fact I have a midnight departure coming up out of BNE later this year and I don't fancy carrying golf bag and 2 pieces of luggage on train.

Thanks for the advice.
