Generally a frequent flyer to easily gain Platinum status. My cycle end is at the end of September. I have not got enough status credits in this year; as i had an accident and have been unable to fly for the past 6 months. I am now cleared for flying from the start of next month.
Is there any way Qantas would allow me to retain my Platinum status? Or is it just a waste of time? Should i just use my velocity platinum match to fly?

Please advise.

If you've got a decent history with QF as a Plat, I'd contact them for sure. Explaining your position may well see you comped WP.

No hard and fast rules here. Some members have had automatic comp despite lack of required SC's, others have been sent an email asking them to outline their travel plans. Some have had no email, no comp and been dropped back to Gold.
If you haven't either received an email or been re-set by now then I would send a polite, concise email requesting a comp, outlining the reasons for your lack of travel and outlining your resumed travel and future booking plans for the following year.
Good Luck and may your recovery continue

SWMBO is currently sitting on 1180 SCs with an end of September 2012 reassessment date so no comp there

(she is waiting for some double SCs from the 8th of September to tip her over so she will make it)

Comps have been known to happen after the anniversary date with no notice to the lucky person other than a letter a few weeks later! Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, whoops, I mean Status Fairy!

I once went from Platnium level (many years held) to Silver level the next due to a lack of flying for personal reason. I recieved a complimentary gold status for tht year.

i think thats a soft landing which is expected?

This is correct. If you fail to achieve the required number of status credits to maintain your level in your membership year, you will drop back to the membership level below the failed to retain level.

There is some evidence that if you have not had the 4 QF segments you may not have a soft landing, but I know people who ceased flying on QF entirely from WP and keep dropping down the chain with soft landings.
