I have been asked by an American friend to recommend a resort in the North Island. We have never stayed at upmarket resorts but I am sure a few on here will have.
Grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Depending on budget. Huka Lodge is about as good as it gets.
The Hilton in Taupo has nice apartment style rooms.
I stayed there a whole ago, and whole we didn't use the restaurant, I hear it's pretty good.
There are a range of high end lodge / Bed &Breakfast places around, all catering to the high end tourist , so a little on line research is probably a good start.

I was also going to suggest the Huka lodge and also the Chateau Tongariro as something different
