Hi all,

Around six months ago I booked the following flights with Malaysia Airlines :
04/10 Ist - Kul
07/10 Kul - Be

Of course, the Kul-Bne route was cancelled in June, leaving me with a rescheduled flight via Sydney. Despite the fact that this has me departing Kul almost a full day earlier than planned (which has left me with the final nights accommodation going to waste and non-refundable) , I accepted this without too much complaint.

However, I have today received an email stating that the IST - KUL route has now also been cancelled. I have been rebooked onto a Turkish Airlines flight departing IST at 1am and arriving in KUL mid afternoon on the 03/10 (compared with the original plan of arriving around 7am on the 04/10). Obviously this will require me to book an additional nights accommodation in KUL, on top of the final night that I am unable now to use.

My question is - do Malaysia Airlines have any obligation to compensate me for these expenses, and also for the inconvenience that this has caused?

Thanks in advance

I believe from another thread here on AFF that Malaysia airlines will provide you with hotel accommodation, free of charge, in Kuala Lumpur. You should contact MH reservations for details (if they don't understand straight away, just mention you've had a double cancellation due to schedule changes and now a forced overnight in KL).

It might also give you an excuse to re-jig the flights again closer to the date you had in the beginning when you had flights IST/KUL/BNE.

Since MH have effectively cancelled both of the flights you actually booked, you would probably have grounds to ask for a refund. But if you're happy to go with what they offered you, MH will offer a hotel in KUL for lengthy connections (I believe 8-24 hours). This is actually standard MH practice for lengthy connections that are forced due to scheduling. It's called STPC, or Stopover Paid by Carrier. Speak to MH Reservations and they should be able to help.

I have purposely booked flights with MH in the past as I prefer to avoid night flights. This allows me to break my journey and book into a hotel overnight. When travelling in J, the hotel was the airport Pan Pacific. I quite like STPC.

Thanks for the replies - very helpful.

I have contacted Malaysian who said that they would have someone from the appointment department contact me with a solution. I heard nothing for a week or so and called to see what was going on.

The response was to email their complaints department, which I have now done twice for no response.

Any suggestions on how to move this forward? Anyone I can actually complain to?

Thanks again
