Question for all of those people who done the AA challenges...

How does the requalification work --? Is it still under the standard rules (50k q-points, at least 4 sectors on AA) ... Even if you suceed the challenge, you guy boosted for one year but then it is hard to keep up unless you arrange AA flights right?

I haven't done the AA challenges but its been posted that you need to requalify under the standard rules, else you drop status. Only once dropped (would be effective 1 March each year) can you attempt another candy thief exercise.

In addition to KF's correct info, note that a Challenge commenced between 1st Jan and 1st June will provide status through to the end of Feb the following year (Feb 2007 for a challenge commenced now). A challenge commenced between 16th June and and 16th December will provide status through to the end of Feb the year after, meaning if you start the challenge on 16th June 2006, you have status until Fen 2008.

Now, if you commence a challenge in the first half of this year, and you achieve enough EQP, Miles or Sectors to re-qualify the status, you retain it until Feb 2008. That is what I will be doing later this month. I will both complete the Plat challenge and re-qualify Platinum all before June 16th (pending flight posting delays). The challenge gets me Plat until Feb 07 and the re-qual gets my status extended until Feb 08.

Congrats NM

You're on track for exec plat (ie another OW Emerald)
a second DONE4 would make EXP. I just don't know whether I will get another one this year. With my travel schedule, I could do 3 more, or none - just never know. It would be nice to make it and hence retain Emerald status.

I'll be faced with dropping status from Platinum on 1 March 2007, but am I right in thinking that I will drop to Gold and not base? If so, I've heard that you can't apply for the Platinum Challenge whilst you have existing status, even if it is Gold - which would mean that I'd have to wait until 1 March 2008 to apply for the Platinum Challenge again... Is this correct?

Sorry for being unclear. You cannot rechallenge for a status currently held. So must drop to Gold or no status before redoing the Platinum Challenge, and must drop to no status before redoing the Gold Challenge.

In other words, a Challenge cannot be used to requalify or retain your current status.

Thanks Kiwi Flyer and NM - that certainly clears things up for me. In fact, it works out very well, as I'll be embarking on another RTW trip late-June 07 so I shouldn't be without Platinum benefits for very long. I'll just have to learn to live with PS and AA Gold (same diff) in the meantime.

Currently AA does not enforce the 4 sectors rule.

But don't sue me if they suddenly start doing so!

Does AA really look at the 4 sectors on AA flights requirement? Even if it is possible to qualify on miles/points -- getting those sectors is difficult unless based in US?

As far as I am aware, BA is the only OneWorld airline currently enforcing the 4-flights rule.
