Just thought I would relay my experience (even while betraying my laxness) In case it helps others. Booked an impromptu trip to the US on the weekend and then saw that the kids passports had expired the week before. All four of them! Yes Oz and US dual citizens - and need both.
1: Oz: website down. Called Monday am, and they said no apps available to get passports! Must have letter from doctor or hospital to get interview. Could maybe get that, but decided instead to just crash office. Mean woman told me how pathetic I was (which believe me I knew), an hour later a nice woman interviewed me, and $450 and 24 hours later, ready for pick up.
2. USA: emailed over weekend and they emailed back 8am Monday. Got appt for Tues am and schlepped whole family in. One hour and $210 later, had passports.
Tip: With smart phone calendars, can book things years in advance - put in reminders to renew passports 9 months in advance. Had done w mine, but not kids. Whoops.
