BWT or DPO would suit me! A bit of competition for QF into DPO wouldn't hurt!

They're not terrible, I actually enjoy flying in smaller aircraft half of the time!

If you've not flown on these birds before bear in mind that they board from the rear only, you want the last row!

Not too bad for the short time you're usually onboard

On a windy day I much prefer somewhere further forward. Really not a lot of time involved in unloading either

LST and MQL are the two for the Victorian based planes. Had my father asking about "those funny Virgin planes with propellers" on the weekend while he was visiting, he is from melbourne.:D

I also heard CBR thrown into the mix for the occasional flight (to connect up with the existing ATR flights), as well as perhaps somewhere on the NW coast of Tassie (obvious choice being DPO). Doing the maths, a single aircraft can easily do double daily services to MQL, DPO and then a single lunch time service to somewhere like LST or an aircraft shuffler to CBR.

In terms of trading E190s and 738s for ATRs into LST...that seems like an interesting move to me. Whilst there is a bit of leisure traffic, there is also a solid amount of business traffic, with many of the 738s going out full (yes I know bums on seats doesn't equal yields), which would mean it'd be foolish to downgauge reasonably full flights on larger aircraft for smaller aircraft...unless it were to be simply an additional service, or there was to be some schedule reshuffling with Tiger (hypothetically launching services for what would be the second or third time).

I'm assuming the ATR's in to LST would be complementary to the E190's and 738's, not a complete downgrade.

You'll always notice a difference in aircraft types going in to LST, and for that matter HBA), Summer leans heavier to the 738's whereas Winter leans more towards the E190's (except of course when Hawthorn has AFL games in LST).

An ATR or two during the day to thicken out the schedule wouldn't be a bad thing, but they'd need to keep an eye on QF, depending on what QF do in WA, they'd be mindful of a few all Y class 717's coming back east and being available, upgrading a Dash to a 717 to capacity dump maintain the "65% line in the sand", not that I think LST is in any danger of having bucket loads of seats thrown at it as the yields would be awful.

The problem with downgrading too much capacity on some aircraft type in to Tassie is that it kills any group travel, one of the lessons AN learnt with the predominant CRJ ops around 2000-2001.

DPO would be a good candidate for the ATR's even if it's just two a day to launch with.

Stupid question, but is there any reason why no-one has run a HBA-LST? Seems like there would be enough leisure and business interest to me.

I think AN used to do it many years ago as part of MEL-LST-HBA and vice versa, it would have been before my time.

realistically it's only a 2 hour drive from LST-HBA anyways, so by the time you went across to the eastern shore of HBA to get to the airport, went through check-in requirements and then travelled, the time saving may not be all that great, even if the flight is ridiculously fast.

I don't the politicians in HBA really enjoyed a stop in LST just to get to MEL.

realistically it would be like flying OOL-MCY, just with more chance of getting fogbound at LST...

I was just thinking that that kind of 'milk run' could almost work. From memory tasair operate BWT - HBA in a metro or something similar that small.

Funnily enough I've been trying to hitch a ride in SEair's Caravan for their occasional OOL - MCY leg on the way to lady Elliot island. I have to travel between the coasts reasonably often an the middle section through Brisbane kills me everytime!!!!

yeah the traffic in Brisbane between OOL and MCY, would be a little worse than the traffic in Oatlands between HBA & LST ;)
