Long time lurker 1st time poster, please be kind to me :)
Need help from you all frequent flyer gurus.
I'm wondering if it is possible to redeem a Malaysian Airlines flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur using the Qantas Frequent Flyer points. I currently have around 150k QFF points and looking at travelling in early Nov. Tried searching from Qantas website using Classic Flight Rewards but it's only showing Qantas or Emirates Flight?
Cheers!

You should be able to but availability is less for partner airlines than for MH Enrich members. You should be able to check availability on ba.com and then call QF

Having said availability might be low, I just checked a random date in October on ba.com and they have up to 8 (!) seats in J via MEL

I tried some random dates from oct-jan 17, only showing Cathay or Qantas, no Malaysian Airlines T.T
Does that mean I have to call to check for availability?

Yes, as the Qantas site will only show flights from select partners. You will need to book over the phone but should be able to get the phone booking fee waived since you can't book it online.

It may be a good idea to check availability of flights by either signing up with British Airways - as suggested by andye (if you have an overseas address as they don't accept Australian-based applications) or an award searching website (I use awardnexus.com), which will save time and effort on the phone with Qantas.

Let us know how you go. Interested in what their surcharges are these days.

Hi,
FYI, I called QANTAS in regards to return SYD to KUL in J; there is limited availability in December.
They were charging 130000 points + approx $535 taxes + $60/6000pts booking fee.

As its available and not online you should not pay 6000pts booking fee, you need to remind them of this.

Is $262 or so reasonable in terms of taxes on that sort of leg? What does everyone think?

In J? Not too bad. MH tends to charge slightly lower than average points but higher than average taxes. CX for example charges lower taxes but costs more points.
