Hi All,

I'm sure with all the AA elite/"candy from a baby" members here that this will be an easy question. :)

My wife has accumulated lots of AA miles from credit cards, and we're moving back to Sydney from the US next year. We're looking forward to using some of the 20,000 mile "Wholly Within Aus/NZ" AA awards on QF, and saving my QF points for upgrades etc.

When living in Australia, how do you actually redeem the miles for these flights? Can you do it online? Or do you have to call the US to do it? I've read from other posts that AA has an office in Sydney, but can they handle award redemptions etc?

Thanks for your replies. Looking forward to getting back to Australia and away from the nasty Michigan weather (-3C and snowing today).

Thanks for the reply Dave - does (02) 9923 3600 sound right?
or 1 300 650-747? same place?

cheers

Sounds great. Look forward to burning up some miles. Is the availability the same as using my QF points? From what i've seen the only difference is that they are only available 330 days before instead of a full year with QF?

Just wondering if I can log onto the QF website using my QFF number, look for whats available online, then call AA for the redemption. I'm QF Gold, so will this show extra seats (T class?) which aren't available for base AA members?

thanks for all the help. BTW, thanks to FT/AFF, I plan to sign my wife up for the gold lack of challenge on the flight back (one-way discount Y) :)

cheers

The availability is the same, just AA does not allow bookings till 330 days. If you are entitled to T class bookings , then these will show when you log into the QF account so will distort the availability view.

What booking class are you in? depending on the class, if you can take the AA codeshare, you can get significantly towards Platinum status . even some discount fares get 1 qpoint per mile on the AA number and LAX-SYD is 7488 miles

Thanks Dave,

Havent booked the flights yet, but I will be checking into the AA fare classes closely before booking anything, and maybe can route the flights to make 10,000 Q miles. Then just have to convince my wife that flying to LAX via ORD, SEA and DFW is a good idea :)

Also, signed her up for a QFF account (free to non-oz residents), so I'll have a bronze/no status way to check availability. Should get around the T-class distortions.

Thanks again for all the advice!

Cheers

James

Your profile says that you are in GRR, so assuming that's where you are starting from, you don't have to go far out of your way, just go LAX-SYD via MEL

GRR-DFW-LAX-MEL-SYD would be a good routing to complete the challenge as long as you take a 1 qpoint per mile fare

GRR-DFW = 931 miles
DFW-LAX = 1235 miles
LAX-MEL = 7923 miles

and so the candy stealing would be completed on the LAX-MEL flight and so would earn a 7923 bonus on that flight

The MEL-SYD would then earn 1000 miles

Miles earned would be 931+1235+(7923+500)*2 = 19012 , just 988 short of a r/t flight from SYD to anywhere in Oz or NZ
