Reconsider non-essential overseas travel - waiver of QF change fees?

If anyone does happen to get through to Qantas and finds out what the go is with changes for bookings made before the 10th of March could they please post them here. Am due to travel to Bali on the 29th of March but want to change that to a domestic booking to (obviously) a different destination on the 29th instead. Was booked as a Saver fare, and it seems like I can't make that change online as its not letting me change the destination. I can't see the SYD-DPS flight on a Sunday getting cancelled due to lack of numbers - most of the Aussies that travel to Bali aren't the sort of people that will let a virus get between them and their Bintang's

Qantas won’t be operating empty flights. I wouldn’t be paying to cancel anything just yet - wait for them to do it.

Well according to 'The Oz' today, one night this week a QF flight from HKG down to SYD had 39 passengers on an A330, so sometimes 'it is.'

History doesn't relate what loadings were northbound. Crew positioning is another consideration.

It will take time for Qantas to scale back it’s flights. This has escalated faster than most of us expected.

The QF share price is likely to drop even further on Monday 156 March 2020. What time did the Prime Minister announce the 'reconsider your need to travel overseas' suggestion? If it was post-1600 hours, the ASX would have closed for the day.

VA shares might drop to four cents or less.

It was around 1500, and the ASX surged after it. It (ASX) ended in positive territory.

Some real mixed messages here from Smart Traveller...st.png

Some people including a few on here couldn't give a rats about any gov alert or TI implications.

I believe I have travelled five times into a Do Not Travel zone: Algiers Kasbah, Zimbabwe, Lebanon, Songkla and Nagorno Karabakh. I did not believe any of these presented any major threat to life but the warnings did make me do some research. The biggest consideration was that this travel invalidated travel insurance but on each occasion the travel was for three days max and was close to areas outwith the Do Not Travel area. The current warning os on a lesser level, but there is a real threat of borders closing and being forced into quarantine - with little prospect of insurance cover. I would take that way more seriously than the "off grid" travel I have done.

At the end of the day, we all have to make the call. Risk is a self insured lifestyle .... got the coin - go for it.

If you have unlimited coin, you can take any risk you want. Most of us have finite coin (I suspect usually a lot less than people might think) and we need to limit our exposure. It is about knowing which risks are real (e.g. don't go wandering around Somalia without an army to back you up) and which are political (e.g, the risk of an Azeri missile being fired at Stepanakert in a dormant war) and making the decision accordingly.

You've lost me. I gave up international travel when this thing hit the fan - pure common sense!.

I think that many of us have different thoughts as to when it hit the fan - but I think that pretty much all of us agree that it's really hit the fan now - just about knocked the fan clean off actually. I'd hate to be working in a QF call centre at the moment!

I'm still on the line with QF call centre after 3 1/2 hours. On line chat not operating. Can't change the FF bookings online and travelling on 16/3. Check in might open before I get through!

Managed to get through within 20 minutes earlier this evening, but then I do have Platinum membership.

Have an upcoming trip to Bali next week, saver and discount business return. I'll lose a lot by cancelling it or changing the dates so I will go so long as I don't have a doctors note advising otherwise. Presume a doctors note advising otherwise would remove the fees?

For clarity - I cancelled all travel from mid Jan 2020 - it just seemed so obvious.

FWIW - I hold P1, my wife is a Plat (own travel), and my kids are both Plat. These are immaterial things...

Common sense and awareness is a perfect mix  :)
