Hey guys,

I've never attempted a SC run in the past, but as I'm close to loosing my very first hard earned year of Gold status at the end of April, and I have some travel booked to and around the US the following month, I'm keen to this status by doing a run to gain the 120 sc I am still short.

Am happy to use a combination of existing ff points and $$

Mike

Your lucky to live in Hobart:

A rededeal back via MEL will give you 120 SCs.

Hi markis10,

Thanks for the quick reply with suggested route. This appears to be an excellent option, however when I try to call up the same Hobart to Canberra J fare, it's saying I need to use upwards of 100k points if I only want to pay around $50, as the one-way ticket is around the $950 mark. Am I missing something?

[update] Sorry, my bad. I just realised, the way to do it, is booking the fare via points not 'paying' for the ticket, THEN adjusting the pay & points slider. There is a HUGE difference between doing it one way and the other!!

It will show up on the award booking options under your account, just select the flight and slide the points down to 16K:

Thanks again, yes that's the way I went looking for flights, the 2nd time around! So pardon my ignorance but are these 'Qantas and Jetstar Any Seat Awards' flights all still eligible for the same SC you'd earn while flying on a full J fare, no matter how many points or $$ you choose to use?

Did you just happen to know that there were particularly cheaper J seats to Canberra on that day, or is there an easy way to find similar good value deals like this flight elsewhere, like to say Sydney, on certain dates?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You get the J credits as if you were flying and paying full J, however changes etc are not so flexible, but they are fully refundable! You need to search to find the bargains, and its when they have classic seats that the rates are low!

Good stuff!..Really appreciate your help and advice! I'm off to do some bargain hunting! :)

Changes are ok if you change to a flight option that is the same number of points (at least, this is what QFF did for me yesterday, moved my ex-MEL flight forward by 4 hrs onto a flight that was showing same-point-value JASA seats).

Fallback position was refund points by cancelling old flight and then book new flight I guess.

To all those that offered advice, just wanted to say thanks again. After a lengthy perusal of all the best flight options to maximise the points vs $$$, I picked up a RTN to SYD in J for the 120SC I need, which in the end wasn't the most cost effective option, but I actually have something to do there on this trip, rather than heading somewhere, only to turn around and come back. :)

Hello, I am very new at this and read this post after a search on this site for sc runs. I need to fly to Brisbane from Canberra in May (flexible dates - weekday) and want to maximise sc points. I usually fly on points domestically but never get any sc as a consequence. It seems that if I use points + pay I can get the best of both worlds? I am travellin with a business associate on the Sydney to Brisbane return leg. Any suggestions?
ps. I tried to bring up the awards booking screen under my account but could not find the points + pay option from that screen......am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,

Funny to see this thread reactivated today, as I'm actually on route at this minute doing the SC run I originally posted for advice on. :)

I wish I had seen the thread back then.......I recently travelled to the USA on points (no sc earned). The good news is that I now understand how to book a flight and maximise sc and points as well as minimum $. I am flying to Brisbane in 2 weeks, business class CAN-SYD-BRI-SYD-CAN. I will earn 10,000 points and 320sc.
Thankyou

are you sure you've got those numbers right? i thought that would only be 5000 points and 160 sc's?

Yes if CAN stands for Canberra I also thought it would be 5000 points and 160SC. :)

You can see I am new to this. In the points calculator I entered CAN-SYD-BNE-SYD-CAN. The calculator also has return by same cities ticked.....and therefore calculated doing the same trip x 2. I thought it sounded too good to be true!!!
