Hi all

My incredible workmate / mentor has retired and I'm looking to get him a nice bottle of red as a present. However I traditionally drink $15 whites so I've no idea where to begin.

Any recommendations for something a bit special? Being a true AFFer then bonus points are always a plus but the quality is more important.

Thanks in advance :)

Depends a bit on his tastes.

The thread below might get you started if he likes Shiraz.

You’ll find my recommendations in there also.

I would highly recommend "Mount Mary Quintet 2003". Just had a bottle a few weeks ago, sublime.

Is your friend into his wine? If so, perhaps not a bottle, but a really nice decanter?

Are you looking to get him something to drink now/neat future or something to cellar for ten plus years kind of thing?

Elderton Command Shiraz in a nice wood box will set you back $120 IIRC. I just bought one to give for a 60th.
2 vintages currently available depending on drink soonish or cellar for later. For the remaining $80 you should be able to get some nice Riedel glasses.

Penfolds is the brand name everyone knows, so it does have a wow factor, for those who might not know too much about wine. St Henri is a classic, same as 389 (baby grange)
Yarra Yering no 1 would be a great blend ($100)
I would also look at a 2 x $75-100 bottle, so drink 1 now, 1 to save for later.

You should be able to get a Bass Phillip under $200 at auction.

Langtons have a bunch of the 2015 at the moment on auction, just don't bid on the ones I am watching...;)

Or just buy from the store for $9 over your budget

If Pinot is your thing, this is pretty close to top of the tree in Australia.

Thanks for all the replies. Truly an area I know nothing about!! I'm unsure what he likes specifically but surely a good bottle will taste good even if it's not your favourite grape variety.

Time to get googling ...
