I have spent many hours using the AAdvantage online system and using the AAdvantage operator to get flights - the operator hasn't been any better than me online. Is there a better way? There just seems to be so little availability for Business or better and some routes there are zero economy even.

Here is an example of a recent 'successful' booking made. I will post a couple more on separate threads. Did it on AAdvantage myself, and didn't really get the dates I would have preferred because of lack of availability, but still better than paying normal fares:

9 Jun QF PER-SYD, SYD-CNS
14 Jun QF CNS- MEL, MEL - PER
Business class, 37,500pts US$124

I actually wanted two pax but only one was available. So I booked another ticket same flight with Qantas FF award points. They only had economy available so I waitlisted for Business and ended up getting it, so I am still married!

Thanks Trixydoza - I misread my activity statement- got the wrong line. So have edited post to 37,500 points from original 62,500 pts.

I booked for Mrs NM to travel QF Business Class BNE-PER-BNE in June. No problems getting a single seat in both directions on the flights she wanted on the days she wanted to travel, booked about 3 weeks before travel. It was 37500 miles each way.

What am I missing?

I tried Per-BNE for the dates I wanted and then BNE-CNS but no go. I should have mentioned that when I arrived in CNS I discovered that it was a few days before some international iron man event which had the coast road between Port Douglas (my actual destination) and Cairns closed on my day of departure, so had to drive 2.5 hour route to CNS instead of the 60 min route. maybe it was the event which made flights so difficult, but I still find Business to LAX/SAN/SFC/NYC (via hubs), really difficult to find even checking all routes (SIN, HKG, KUL, JKK, NRT, AUK, etc). I was trying in May and June for Aug dep. On the agent's advice I waited a month to see if more seats opened up and they didn't, there were fewer. Yet when I looked for flights 6 months in advance to UK, there seemed a lot more than a couple of months in advance to US. Normally the dates wouldn't be a huge issue, but in both the US and UK cases in this instance we are meeting up with people so the date range was more limited.

Did you stopover (rather than transit) in Sydney or Melbourne? I would have thought your itinerary should have set you back 35k not 37.5k.
