We already have a separate May/June 2010 V Aust flight Y+ for Syd/LAX return.
Does anyone have recent experience with a separate ticket from SFO/LAX & booking their luggage through to Syd?

No personal experience however my aunt & uncle travelled from Vancouver to Sydney last August and were booked on Alaskan to LAX then VA to SYD on seperate tickets and there bags were tagged through no problems.

Who are you flying SFO-LAX? If Virgin America it shouldn't be a problem, I found this on the VAus website (it may only apply to tickets sold as one, not separate):

Connecting Destinations

Virgin America currently flies to eight US cities. V Australia passengers can connect with Virgin America operated flights to and from San Francisco, New York - JFK, Washington DC, Seattle, Boston and Fort Lauderdale.
Though the airlines may need to know your other details so the bags can be tagged through, a call to VA or VX should help clear that up.

I'm not sure if this helps or not but I had an interline from QF to UA at LAX back in late '08, dropped the bag at the rescreening point in T4 and made it to UA no issues.
