I am hopeing someone can help me with this...In 5 weeks I will be flying with UA to Lax from Melbourne via Sydney & via SFO with a 3hr layover. When we get off at SFO to catch UA domestic flight for our last leg of journey to LAX.. will I have to collect my luggage and go thru customs & recheck it in at SFO or will I collect my luggage at LAX and then continue on thru customs??

In the US and A you usually clear customs at the first point of arrival.

Dont UA have a direct flight to LAX?

Yes, UA do have direct flights to LAX but we chose to take the SFO layover flight. This will be our first trip to the US..so thanx for your answer.

After you clear customs in SFO there is a short cut to the departure gate area but you can only use this if your bags have been through checked to LAX and I can't see any reason why they woulnd't be. Look for the sign.

If someone's bags are only tagged as far as SFO then after clearing customs you exit the customs hall into the main checkin area of the terminal where you would have to do the bag drop thing at the UA counters.

May I ask why you are going MEL-SYD-SFO-LAX? I mean, wow! Dont they offer morning connections on Virgin to connect to UA840?

Thanx, I will keep this in mind...
