Probably just another clown who wants to have it both ways (feminist/old fashioned lady) depending on the situation as long as she always benefits.... I don't go out of my way to help ladies per se, they campaigned hard for equality so they get to take the good bits with the bad...

I will open doors for people if its easier for me, guys or girls and say thanks if they do it for me... There was a woman in the shops the other night, smaller lady sizing up lifting some shelving into a trolley and i did ask if she needed any help, but she intelligently replied that if she couldn't lift it in the shop she couldn't get it out of the trolley into the car outside later...

But yes the muppet over packed it, she can lift it or check it...

I'm constantly struggling with the problem of being hit on when boarding my flights, my solution, and to give everyone a equal chance of scoring with me, is to personally place everyones bags into the overhead bins.

I'm all for equal opportunity, so I normally just drop my carry on in the aisle in front of the closest lady and say "put that away for me, darl".

I always hold the door open for someone close behind me (male or female) and have never copped a spray - likewise about 90% of the time the person in front of me will hold the door - they always get a "thank you" or "cheers" depending on my snap judgement of whether they are a formal or informal type of person.

This is my experience too, I have helped others through doors, across the road, putting bags into the overheads when a person seems to be struggling/too short, handing someone something from the locker etc. I vote for a continued feeling of community and helping others where we don't actually run a risk of injury ourselves. Even if a writer writes something that's inflammatory and just silly, I don't feel like I want to be baited.

Despite the one spray I have got I still open doors etc.
I should give the other side of my experiences.I was in NYC doing a city walk.We were near Washington Park.A LOL was trying to cross the road and everyone was ignoring her so I detoured and helped her across.We had a great talk on that crossing-she was 95,born in NYC and had never spent a day outside the city.But boy had she had some experiences.I thoroughly enjoyed our little conversation.

I was going to go with some version of: if you can't lift it, don't pack it.

I'm happy to accept help with my luggage, but sometimes even my husband doesn't bother. It's usually faster for me to do it if it's already in my hand.

(I also sometimes politely decline, if I think the bloke in question is frailer, though far more chivalrous, than I)

New Yorkers are strange though. They apologise for "nothings" - like a little brush up in the streets, (maybe they were trying to hit on me ) but when you really need help they run a mile. Countless times people would say sorry for things I'd never think of saying sorry for here, but when I really needed help (a paper bag with all my shopping fell apart in the rain and I had parcels going everywhere - lying in puddles etc - damn your paper bag Lord And Taylor) not one person stopped to help me out. I wouldn't expect that really, but stop saying sorry for things that aren't important and ignore the important ones.

I still open doors for everybody. I think that is just common courtesy but is rapidly disappearing.

P.S. If this journalist is the one that was mentioned a few posts back she would not be getting hit on very often. But that is just me....

I know how she feels. I have to beat the other pax back all the time. It's *so* tiring to be hit on when you're just walking around the street, and in the confined space of an aircraft, I just know every male, straight or gay, is dying to crack on to me. And most of the women too.
