Query about changing an award reservation

Hi,

I have an AA Aadvantage award booked HBA-SYD-BKK

Can I change this to (flights are available) HBA-MEL-HKG-HKT

The destination is still in the same country so not sure if that is enough or have to end up at same destination precisely.

If can't just change it I will have to cancel and make a new award booking.

Changes to origin or destination are not permitted on same award - dates/times/route are ok to change.

Can you add a BKK-HKG-HKT set of flights and then change the HBA-SYD-BKK-HKG to HBA-MEL-HKG? That should work I would think.
