ABOUT a quarter of budget airline flights left or arrived late last year as airlines overall failed to meet the long-term average for punctuality.

Figures released today by the Bureau of Infrastructure and Regional Economics also show passengers travelling between Adelaide and Port Lincoln were most likely to leave on time last year while those travelling between Darwin and Perth recorded the most punctual arrivals.

The figures show 81 per cent of flights by participating major and regional airlines met the criteria for on-time departures — within 15 minutes of the scheduled time — while 79 per cent arrived on time. Cancellations represented 1.8 per cent of all scheduled flights.

Is it more difficult to keep flights on time in Australia? Jetstar Asia was 92% on time in January, and never went below 86% in 2013.

Yes, 80% otp overally really is poor.

I suspect SYD and BNE contribute significantly, and MEL too once it gets reduced to single runway ops (usually weather related). And of course these three have such a huge chunk of overall flights, it cascades when one of them is in trouble.

Would be interesting to know per-airport stats. Is that available anywhere?
