Hi all,

I have a difficult choice to make shortly. Need to decide who to fly with! I'm heading over to run the Boston Marathon and want to arrive comfortably and fresh!

QR: KUL-DOH-JFK-DOH-KUL
A340-A350-A350-A330

EY: KUL-AUH-JFK-AUH-KUL
A330-A380-A380-A330

The total time and layovers are very similar, and are the most direct. They also are very similar prices at the moment ($4k).
This would be my first time in J on a longhaul. What would your choice be and any particular reason why?

On the other hand, my flight isn't til April 2017 so I could also wait for some sales to pop up. Apparently QR regularly have great prices for these routes?
I'm also open to positioning somewhere else to get even cheaper flights or in F. (eg was considering positioning to Lahore to get dirt cheap F on EY, but then it was too much of a hassle to get to Lahore lol).

Thanks for your advice in advance!

Hope you don't mind me stealing your route because I'm currently planning a trip to NY next June :D

My 2 cents FWIW - I would go with EY only because you get to fly the A380 on 2 of those legs.

Sorry oh_lol, I can't help.

But anyone considering staging through Lahore to snare a cheap F flight deserves my full respect. I'm not sure I'd have the stomach to weather the Pakistani Taliban, Laskar i Toiba or the odd Uighur.

Haha no problems! I've never actually flown 'direct' to NYC before. I've always had to go via other cities. I was slightly leaning towards EY for the A380 (party bar on the way home too!) and the chauffeur, but I think I may eventually book based on price.

If it helps, I've also found it's about $1k cheaper to position in Colombo, but after actually getting to CMB (be it in Y or J), possible accomodation and the time, I personally didn't see the all the hassle.

Haha I considered it for about a day, but after a bit of research NO flight connected well in LHE and I would need to stay overnight somewhere, not to mention visa and all that stuff you mentioned. So sadly no respect earned on my end :p

Since your trip starts from KUL, I suggest you try positioning yourself to MNL. MNL>DOH or AUH>JFK or BOS can be had for <USD2500 in J. Sales are quite frequent. Subscribe to their email notifications.

KUL>MNL can be MH or AK or 5J

I haven't flown EY, but I have transits AUH and DOH in comparison is.....well there is no comparison. And the QR lounges are quite extraordinary and I'm a tough customer when it comes to a good lounge. QR I find to be excellent, I like the 340 J seat and I like the overall service.

QR do have amazing sales, you just missed the big one. I think the next one will be due early in the new year.

My final comment would like be, where do you credit points? QR is Oneworld and you get options, EY has its own thing going on. It depends on who you use more often but if you're in KUL, MH is OW so that makes more sense (and they have some phenomenal J pricing at times). Enjoy

Glad to hear your thoughts on QR. Looks like it's leaning the way if I had to make a choice right now. The layovers in AUH/DOH each way are around 4h, so I'd say the lounge will play a strong part in the decision. I may have to wait for the QR sales again. Do you know if they have a sale for all flights, or only select flights?

I have lost status with all airlines since I don't travel for work anymore. I only have around 150k of points sitting in Velocity, but have a huge stockpile of points with my AMEX & Westpac AMEX.
I guess, what program would you recommend I look into? I don't fly particular routes frequently anymore, only for holidays. I would prefer to use points to treat myself to longhaul in J or F.

if you live in KL I'd pick MH so you can keep status. They all have min segment requirements. QF has 4 and I think it's a good programme as it stands today but they're all going spend based so who knows what the future will be.

Not it sure about the sale prices ex KL. BKK is always a good start point for QR and CMB is even better

4 hours in Doha will be so much better than AUH

If you visit Pakistan and plan to visit the USA prepare to be well acquainted with Officer Martinez from now on.
