I hate redeye flights in general, and I especially think one that’s ~3hrs long is unlikely to let you have much useful sleep, if any at all. No chance I’d be taking the outbound sector but at least the return AKL-MEL is timed nicely.
I think I’ll still stick to MEL-SYD and then QF3 SYD-AKL like I did last year though. Nice plane, nicer timing, and more SCs

Melbourne to Auckland has historically always had terrible timings. Virgin had a morning departure back the day. Qantas luckily still do.

Jetstar have always had terrible times.

I often hear Bogan Missile 217 go over my house late at night on its way out and say a prayer for those onboard each time the airline in general is somewhat bearable but I think a back of the clock shift with em would push me over the edge! I’ve got no idea how folks cope on the longer JQ slogs back from DPS, NRT, SIN, HKT etc. in the middle of the night…….

Not quite if you are having Q Suites with them.
When you have a strict policy of never fly Economy Class in and out of Australia, then even just a short flight into Auckland will make it so enjoyable with lie flat bed and anytime dining.

I feel even in an EK F over these hours, it still sucks. I've flown redeye 3-4 hour flights before in a good J. It doesn't matter how good the seat is, you just feel like cough the next day because you've maybe slept 2 hours or so. If you're tag flying to HKG it might be a bit better, but is MEL - HKG that much more expensive than MEL - AKL - HKG (and the 00:30 MEL departure is Aria).
