QFL 717 tired already?

First flight of the new year in a refurb 717 CBR - MEL this morning and was a bit disappointed to find there was no iPad, reason being there was no longer a seat pocket!

From my seat I could see a couple of other failed seat pockets as well with the cause seeming to be dodgy bungy cord.

Did you check in the top pocket (where the magazine normally is kept) since the mini-iPad can slip down out of sight in there.

I noticed the same 'wear and tear' on the seat pockets on my last QFL 717 journey. I would have thought that robust materials would be a fundamental principle for aircraft interiors.

Hm really? I flew CBR-MEL on Saturday morning, QF1533 and the interior looked great and new, everyone had iPad's functioning. There are two seat pockets per se, one up the top where they put the Qantas magazine and aircraft safety brochure and down the bottom where the iPad is stored. And like the 767s they have a strap/belt for you to mount your iPad.

I actually quite enjoyed the flight, thought the legroom in economy was sufficient and was happy with Qstreaming although not gate to gate.

Only qualms were the box-style meals and also walking past the business class seats, they looked like they had less leg room than PE and J on a 734 would have been a better seat.

I was on a 717 this morning in J and all J seats had an iPad in the top seat pocket. The bottom seat pocket had the in flight magazine. I didn't see any wear and tear on the upholstery in J. I didn't use the iPad in flight as it was just a CBR-SYD hop.

As I was eating I noticed that they finished the upholstery seams the same way I (sometimes) finish the centre-back seam on my skirts i.e. press the seam open and stitch the seam allowance down (a modified flat felled seam). Also I could not detect any back stitching which are all signs of excellent sewing. Working with leather leaves no room for error and without "crawling all over the furniture" I couldn't see any major issues with the upholstery in J on my flight this am. I am back on a 717 (in J) this afternoon so I will have a closer look.

I have to say that for an aviation enthusiast the 717 is a great ride. How cool is the take off roll? Next time I have the opportunity to fly on a 717 I am going to book in steerage and select a seat as far back as possible.

I love the 717 experience and the interior treatment is great it's just that this particular aircraft had seat pockets which were coming apart. On the lower cloth pocket the 'stretch' is provided by a bungy cord which disappears through a hole in the plastic seat back. It would appear that the mechanism securing the end has failed (it might even just be a simple knot used).
