Hey i would be interested to receive some advice regarding the use of qantas frequent flyer points being redeemed on international flights or upgrades.

I am an SG with about 385k points.

I would like to take myself and my mother to japan at the end of the year.

Now, the kicker is that i would only go and take my mother if it was business class, so the question i guess is as a SG going to japan what is the likelihood that buying a y class ticket and putting in a upgrade request to business class would be accepted?

J from syd to tok is 145k points
Y upgrade to J is 30k points (And around $1300 i would assume)

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to maximise the chances of flying J with the least amount of points used that would be great. Ie. would redeeming the points on JAL or Cathay be a smarter option or a better bet?

Thanks in advanced, any advice would be truly helpful.

Note that the cheapest Y fare I can see for SYD-NRT-SYD is A$2225 plus taxes. A fare of around $1300 is more likely a V fare class and hence will cost you 48K points each way per person.

However, note that if you route via BNE and only upgrade the BNE-NRT-BNE sectors, teh cost is 40K points per person each way, and generally the demand for J seats on that route is less than from SYD.

Best chance for upgrades is to avoid travelling Friday through Monday as those days tend to be busier for business travellers so they can maximise the business week at their destination.

Also note that an award BNE-NRT-BNE in business class will cost 60K per person each way, so only 20K more than the upgrade. So adding on a cheap red-e-deal at each end may deliver a reasonable value trip while ensuring business class for the long-haul sectors.

Note that some BNE-NRT-BNE flights go via CNS (same flight number so no difference in points) and are operated by 767-300 aircraft with Dreamtime seats, not Skybeds.

grey goose,

Welcome to AFF.

Several things to consider.

You say the end of the year. Remember that Dec - Jan is a busy time and rewards are hard to come by so what ever you do you need to make some plans ASAP.

The only way to guarantee business class is to book business class. Upgrades are even more hit and miss than straight rewards bookings. You could look at booking via JAL or Cathay however you would need to make the 'J' booking as you could not us QF points to upgrade with them.

I see that the cost would be 144,000 X 2 plus 2,500 IF you needed to use QF bookings by telephone.

I had a quick look and there were some award seats showing to me in November as a WP but they may not show to you as an SG.

I suggest you logon to the QF web site and see what is available to you. It may not show all the Cathay availability as I believe some aren't showing correctly.

Also remember you will need to pay the all appropriate fuel fines and taxes that go with the fare.I hope this helps. :D

Thank you all so much for your help thus far.

upon searching on the qff website i noted that it claims that the economy only airline 'australian airlines' operates business class from Syd-brs-nar

Could anyone confirm that i am correct in my suspicions that it would be very difficult to fly business class in an economy class only aircraft?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Its only for economy awards that Platinum and Gold members see enhanced inventory (T class in addition to the standard X class). For business and first class awards the availability is the same for all QF FF members.

'Australian' exists in name only. It is no longer an "economy only" airline. Australian Airlines operates the flights for Qantas. Their 767s have been converted back to two class configuration. They are, for all intents and purposes Qantas aircraft.

Until August only.
