Thai international is part of the star alliance so I figured Thai airways would be too. It was only a $10 difference anyway.

Edit: just realized qantas is oneworld alliance and not the star alliance. Might have to sign up with krisflyer or Thai royal orchid now. Which is better?

I have both. The good thing about Thai Royal Orchid and Kris Flyer are they are free. You don't have to pay to join.:D

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I find that the best value use of points in terms of points/$ ratio is to upgrade from Business to First. I recently did that Syd-LHR on the A380 and that is the best use of points imaginable.

Another good use is Syd to Lord Howe Island which I have booked for the summer at 16,000 points a ticket. Given the market, the cheapest flight you will ever get to Lord Howe is about $800 and that is if you are lucky. Problem is that for a good time to go, you need to book using points almost a year out. There isn't a better points/$ ratio any where when flying economy.

200k points should get you 2 one way upgrades from Business to First to Europe and get 2 tickets to Lord Howe.

The best way to use your points is on a Business class ticket (with 'classic awards', of course; if you want to throw your points away, use the 'any seat' option). If you pay for a ticket using cash, it is usually 4 times the price of an economy fare; if you pay using points, it is only double. This can make your points worth around 10c/point. It used to be that upgrading by using points was the best use of points, but now, if you are on a really cheap paid fare, it will cost you nearly the same to upgrade as to buy the ticket outright, using points. That said, upgrades are unreliable and you only find out at the gate if you are successful or not.
Flights - any flights, are still the best use of points, I think.

Ha I"m on the same syd-hkt flight as you. Come say hello to the strange drunk girl in 1K!

Since I blew all my $$ on *class though I'll be at the $10/night hostels though :)

That's if I can get ODU to starclass. Jetstar wanted to charge me $720 to upgrade to star class when the fare difference was only $400 or so. Darn fees. Trying to avoid it by trying our luck when we check in.
