John, my understanding is that there need to be I class seats available for a seat to be released for a WP.

I've heard this previously and I'm curious on peoples experiences. For example has anyone been successful getting an international U seat release around the xmas period or other peak times where there was I availability?

I have only asked for a J seat to be released once, for travel just after Xmas. The request was sent to yield management and I was advised of my success the next day.

To answer my own question I got an P ticket to LAX on boxing day. Also had the option of U out of Sydney.

I haven't done it myself but my understanding is that as long as the points are out of your account it's ok. When I got my seat released above they asked who the passenger was.

I would've thought Xmas is a bit of a low-season for J class though? This is why you usually get op-ups and cheap J deals ? with oversold Y.

Just picking up on the comments about published benefits. I note that release of classic award seats is now a published platinum one benefit. I always thought it was a published platinum benefit.

AFAIK this was never actually published in relation to WP ... it did/does exist (I have used it).

No biggie, I'm ~ 0/10 with my attempts.

Have always been able to fall back on CX or BA to get the required No of seats. Thank goodness for OW!

I got two U fares to LAX for Jan 1st, for hubby (WP) and daughter ( they did have to send off request for 2nd seat initially), then realised the next day that I could go too, so rang again.....
I couldn't get a seat on their flight, but was offered U fare for the next day.....so took that too.

The points had to come out of hubby's a/c for my flight the following day

Good result I think for 3 fares.

Are you requesting one seat or for the whole family? That's probably the reason.

For those with success. Currently looking at a flight with I3U3, needing 5 seats. Recommendations to take the 3 U seats and then request another 2 separately, or try to grab all 5 in one go? This is on a domestic flight. So I'm not being greedy on QF1.

Are you requesting one seat or for the whole family? That probably the reason.

Normally 1 or 2. Wouldn't waste my time calling for >2.

Just as a follow-up. Qantas released 2 U seats for my folks to LAX but couldn't release any class for the trip home (school hols maybe). So as they'll be buying a W one way fare home I asked if they'd release 2 P seats to LAX and they did that instantly.

So you can definitly have seats released for family.

One thing that was different this time, compared to others, is that there seems to be two types of seat release. An automatic release the system offers and a manual request to yield. For the flights home the call centre put two seats "on request" and said call back in a couple of days after someone manually looked at the request.

Anyway parents very happy none the less - first time in first class.

I knew about this benefit and thought Qantas provided the notification. Not sure I'm bothered to look it up.

Still it is interesting that this is now published for WP1, and WP is not included.

I would expect nothing less, WP hasn't had any positive enhancements for years - it's just been sucked out at both ends for the benefit of SG and WP1.

I've managed to get J seats released on SYD-HKG and MEL-HKG without too many problems.
