BITRE has published its March 2018 international avaition report that includes some details on QF9/10 March 2018 passenger numbers.

These flights commenced on 24 March 2018 so that gives eight northbound (i.e. PER - LHR) and (bearing in mind arrival date is the key) seven southbounds if my maths is correct.

There were 1039 northbound passengers ex PER and 1188 southbound travelling LHR - PER.

This works out to 130 passengers a trip on average joining in PER while 170 typically alighted in PER ex LHR.

This tallies with our intrepid AFFer JessicaTam who if memory serves me correctly was on the first southbound QF10 LHR to PER, reporting that 36 passengers continued on to MEL.

It is not possible to work out the typical number using the flight from MEL as for much of March, it operated via DXB, so one cannot separately calculate those travelling via PER.

If a flight keeps the same number, BITRE shows passengers in this case as travelling MEL to LHR so in April one ought be able to examine that given it was the first full month of 'the 9' and 'the 10' running PER - LHR and return.

Of course these first few days included all the media celebrities (?) on board the inaugural northbound (plus AJ and assorted hangers-on) so it's not 'normal.'

Sounds like most LHR-bound passengers from Melbourne must be going via Singapore?

Sounds like most LHR-bound passengers from Melbourne must be going via Singapore?

opusman, in March 2018 there were 4469 passengers who originated in MEL for LHR and 3148 southbound. This is ONLY QF9/10 as no other airline has the 'same' flight number throughout.

So northbound it's 144 or so a day and about 101 the other way.

The figures seem low: perhaps there were a couple of days when 'the 9' and 'the 10' via DXB did not operate.

If passengers change their flight number, i.e. QF412 MEL - SYD, QF1 SYD to LHR via either DXB or (later in month) SIN, that won't be recorded as a MEL - LHR journey by BITRE, but as a SYD - LHR journey (if on QF, as 'the 1' goes through all the way as the 2 does coming back.)

If one uses any other airline, it'll be shown as a (say) MEL - SIN journey on SQ, not a MEL - LHR journey even if the passenger has a ticket to the latter.
