There is also the option of buying a discount Y seat - sometimes sub $100 - and using points to upgrade into W (5,000 points).

It can be as little as 2,000 points from more Flexible fares into Y+, as well... I've done that in the past, where an international connection contained QF8 (e.g. SIN-xBNE-SYD). It was also an instant upgrade confirmation to Y+ where the Z class (Y+ Award) was available at the time.
