We're going to HKG in November (from Brisbane on companion sale) and options are QF8 to Sydney departing BNE at 0745 into Sydney at 1020 or three morning domestic connections.

Advantage of QF8 is that we'll have PE the whole way to HKG and be in international terminal when we arrive in Sydney to take QF127, departing at 1125.

With the dom flight option/s we realise that we have to catch the bus over when we arrive in Sydney and then pass through immigration but have done that before and it's usually pretty quick and painless.

Our worry with the QF8 option is what we're seeing as a tight connection in Sydney - 65 minutes.

Does anyone know/have any experience with how often QF8 is late out of Brisbane/late into Sydney?

If it's late, there isn't another QF flight to HKG and we need to be there earlier that a flight the next day will get us there.

cheers

peter

It is known as QF Late for a reason.

However any delays should be known fairly early on, so you should be looked after if anything happens.

I would be going the Domestic option and getting in early and enjoying the lounge with out the worry of the flight being delayed diverted or other wise. Why add stress if you dont need too.

Take the QF8 option, that way you will get the PE SCs regardless, and as already mentioned, delays are normally known before you go to bed the night before so there is plenty of time to make arrangements, if that happens you still get PE SCs by claiming original routing credit.

Thanks Mannej, Ansett and Markis10,

Domestic option seems the safer bet but I think we might go for QF8. If we can see it's going to be late most likely head for BNE domestic terminal instead of international

Just check your times, I am taking QF8 as a flight to connect in SYD as well except mine is in Sept and I received a notification yesterday that the flight departure is changed to 0635 arriving at 0815, which is tight for my onward departure at 0915, but this would work well for you. You could change to the first QF out at 0600 which I think is an A330. I asked QF if I was to change my flight to that one because I was afraid QF8 would be late they told me I had to pay $100 each as a change fee

You pay the $100 if you change your booking before hand. If it's late and you change at the airport there should be no fee.

Also note that your transit in Sydney will be much quicker as you land at the international terminal and just need to take transit security.

Its an Involuntary change so there should be NO Change Fee based on my understanding. :D

BNE-HKG return (incl QF8) booked and deposit paid. I'm even going to give the qcash card a go on Monday, save myself $40 and earn some points

thanks for advice everyone and good luck with your connection Eric

Why wouldnt you get Premium Economy SCs on a domestic flight instead of QF8? Is a business companion sale different to booking premium economy?

From memory my domestic flights book into B class and I received full Economy SCs in economy on the domestic legs.

Your right, for some reason brain was in VA mode where PE > Y re SC. Earn.

QF8 is a great connection.......did one last month to QF11.

As other have pointed out...any delay will be well known and a recovery plan put in place.

It only becomes a problem If lounge time in SYD is a priority!
