I was hoping someone maybe able to help me with this one. I am currently midway through a DONE4 but now have to return home earlier. I was originally booked to fly SFO-LAX-SYD-PER. I am now flying back this Friday the 19th and am waitlisted on the LAX-SYD sector. The agent has held a seat for me on QF74 SFO-SYD (will cost more because of rerouting and new fuel charges etc). My questions
1) Is QF74 on QF metal
2) Has anyone had experience of flying SFO-SYD and can comment
3) Can anyone with access tell me what F is looking like for 19/5, to see if worth trying for upgrade.

Thanks in advance
Reggie

Yes, it is QF operated 747-400 aircraft.

No direct experience yet, but it will be very similar service and operation to the LAX-SYD flights. Timing is similar to the QF12/QF107 flights. Main difference will be no local Qantas Club lounge so they are using another lounge (was originally reported to be AA lounge, but have not heard conclusively which lounge, but can't be any worse than LAX TBI lounges for the LAX-BNE and LAX-MEL flights).

On that date, QF12 is showing F1A0 so very little chance of an upgrade. Its also show J6D0. So its looking quite full in business class as well.

On that date, QF108 is showing F2A2 so again not much hope for an upgrade. Its also showing J9D0, so you might have a chance of getting a D seat cleared.

On that date, QF74 is showing F9A9 and J9D9, so lots more more and a good chance for an upgrade. I would be taking that option if you can do the re-issue. The seat map is showing only 4A and 4K allocated, and they are probably blocked out as they are the bassinet seats. So it looks like the F cabin may be empty at this stage.

Does anyone know if they have showers at SFO?

Thanks NM you have sold me on QF74. Flying F with all the celebs and those egyptian cotten pyjama's mmmm, you never want to go back.

I am on QF73 over and QF74 return flights in a few weeks and was advised that QF uses the Admirals Club Lounge. Unfortunately, according to the AA site there are no showers in that lounge. If you haven't flown into or out of SFO previously, it is considerably better than LAX (except lounge access). In saying that, depending on your status you may have access to other lounges.

It would be nice if they used the BA lounge. However, that lounge is only open until the last BA departure, which is scheduled as 6:55pm, so it won't be open (as a BA lounge) for OneWorld Emerald/Sapphire members to use when departing on the QF74 flight. That is probably why they are using the AC lounge. Its a pitty QF did not just pay BA to have the use of their lounge prior to the QF departure.

Oh well, looks like a shower in the Domestic QP at Sydney.

I recieved my "MAY enews" from qantas today and they had the following about the SFO Lounge.

New lounge access in San Francisco

Lounge access is now available for Frequent Flyers in San
Francisco.

Platinum and First Class passengers will have access to the
British Airways Terraces Lounge located on the Departures
Concourse near Gate 6.

Gold Frequent Flyers, Qantas Club members and Business Class
passengers will have access to the Japan Airlines Sakura
Lounge located on the departures concourse, past security.

Qantas must be listening to you NM.

Reggie

Both lounges offer light refreshments, complimentary alcohol
and soft drinks, phones, TV, magazines and newspapers

Just a post note to let everyone know what happened.

Got the upgrade so was very happy:D

They used the BA first lounge with direct access to gate 4 from the lounge. Apparently BA lounge did have showers but I didn't use them, I had obtained late checkout of hotel.

F was half empty only 6 pax, service was excellent, best I have seen on QF in a long time.

Flight was late arriving into SYD, after finally passing through immigration and fighting through everyone to grab my luggage, I then had a 45 minute wait to check luggage at the domestic transfer (the queue was twice as long by the time I was checked in). Then 10 min wait for the bus. At the QP in T2 all the showers were full and there were queue's waiting, so no time for shower as they boarded the PER flight 30 mins prior to departure. Then we had to wait for 6 pax transfering from international terminal - surprise surprise. We left 15 mins late but arrived 15 mins early as no headwind. Luggage was off early for a change, straight up to a cab and off home.

Even Cityrail aren't usually that bad!! I think I'd be shelling out $4 and be doing the train transfer. I guess you don't know it when you start in the queue though.

Your right there dajop, I hadn't been through SYD transfer before, and had no idea where the queue ended. Then after being in line so long you dont want to leave. I felt sorry for the guy behind me who was transfering to DJ or Rex and waited all that time in line from way back past the elevator to get the doors and see the sign telling him that it was no point, but by that stage he waited to be told by the person doing the lane pointing J here and why here etc
