I live in Melbourne. I have made numerous trips to Jo'burg over the last year. To do this I have to travel via SYD to take QF63. This is very frustrating, as the flight path SYD-JNB passes exactly over MEL. I can look down and see my home as I fly over! Why doesn't Qantas run this service out of MEL? Fewer overall passenger miles. Fewer FF points to dish out. Passengers saved the terminal transit hassle at SYD. More capacity at MEL, and easier transfer for transiting passengers.

If they can charge you more to fly mel-syd-jnb than mel-jnb then that might be a compelling reason.

Probably a major factor is demand - I am assuming that more people want to fly from SYD than from MEL - or the economics of flying out of MEL just do not work.

I agree there is probably not enough demand to justify QF flights from MEL to JNB. If you really want to avoid SYD, you can always go via PER on the SA flight, on which QF codeshares. It would probably work out much the same time wise, and SA's A340 better in economy that QF's 744s, IMHO. No F on SA, if you are a pointy end flyer, J much of a muchness.
